Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

HMD

I used to have HMDs, like years ago, but never got anything on them. For those of you who still have HMDs, do you receive useful feedback, or do people actually say things to you using it? Just debating if I should bring back HMDs for my characters.

in a decade on this site my hmds have never been hit up once

most games require them tho

the only time i ever got legitimate crit was from a friend who just approached me about something and didn't use my hmd anonymously. i've gotten a couple inflammatory comments from people who just didn't like me back on lj, but that's it. also did lj/dwrp for about 10 years. so that's... never, in 10 years.

i've never gotten any crit constructive or otherwise but i have gotten a few compliments over the years from those i threaded with. i've also had people pm me for similar reasons, so i think i've been v lucky oocly.

I've gotten compliments from people I threaded with but were still strangers so they couldn't tell me directly

never anything constructive, I think that goes straight to wankgate for most people these days

Mixed results for me.

Back in LJ days, someone messaged me on my HMD criticizing the fact that I had unhappy feelings IRL (when journaling was still a popular activity) and that I shouldn't complain about it because I had it good while others suffer and for a while I actually took that to heart and hated myself for complaining about things that seemed miniscule compared to hunger, homelessness, etc. It had nothing to do with my rping, but I was an insecure teenager so.

One of the recent times my HMD was used was because I made a very big blunder on plurk plotting and ran over some other people's funtimes because at that time plurk was hiding messages and you needed to refresh a lot to see missed ones. That one was productive and I got to apologize to the people I had unintentionally run over.

A few times they're praise but mostly from friends. These days, none at all. So ymmv on whether it's useful or not but it really depends on the other person if they'd prefer to.

mine has been used to give me crit, compliments, or ask questions in case something was unclear (for example, i aged up my character when i apped into a game but didn't list it anywhere)

if i start threading with someone new and we don't have each other on plurk/disc and i really want to tell them how much fun i'm having, i'll use an hmd post to compliment them! i could PM it but i think it's nice to leave it as a little testimonial for other people to see :)

you lose nothing by posting one anyway so why not

i've had people comment to my HMDs but it's never been legitimate constructive crit. it's just been snide comments about who I've chosen to tag with or claiming i made them uncomfortable because i didn't tag them enough/reciprocate their enthusiasm.

adding a +1 to the anons saying they've never had anyone use their HMDs in years of RPing

that said I have used someone else's HMD to gently and politely point out that they got a key fact about their character wrong in both their app and the posts they were writing (essentially just the name of their job, an easy fix and a super obvious error). they never responded or corrected the mistake, but flounced out of the game shortly afterwards claiming people were being "mean" and giving them anxiety attacks.

I mostly get compliments on mine, but the few times people have actually used them for crit it's been dumb stuff like 'I don't like the ship you're doing and I'm going to write three paragraphs of bullshit to try and justify why instead of just saying I don't like it'.

I've had much better luck with game HMDs posted in the game community publicly for everyone to use, but those seem to be happening less and less. I get actual good feedback on those because I'm able to detail what's going on with me and ask for crit on specific things.

i've only gotten crit on mine once. it was another player in the game who crited me for incorporating something that was a large part of the character's canon personality/background into my playing.

along the lines of: "i don't understand why you have dr. jekyll turning into a murdering psychopath. it seems a little extreme. can you tell me why you've chosen this route?"

the hilarious thing about it was that the player also played the character extensively and had no clue about this very key part of them.

only once--it was for an oc and the player asked me to not tag them with that specific character because of a personal trigger. it was nicely worded and i completely understood and respected that and so i did not tag them. they were fine with me and liked my other characters so it was just an issue relating to that specific trigger and not to the characterization itself or me personally.

i will say when monthly game-wide hmd posts were a thing i'd get way way more comments but they were always "I LOVE [CHARACTER] KEEP BEING BEAUTIFUL" superficial compliments, or jokes/meme comments, or maybe the occasional "bump up the activity i miss seeing you around" when i disclaimed it with "i know i've had a bad month and haven't been so active lately i'm gonna fix that" so. nice? but not very useful. i can not think of a single instance, in all my years of playing (i have been rping on lj/dw since 2008) where i received actual advice or criticism on my characterization or something i could practically improve upon. very rarely i received a compliment with actual substance and i hold those dear to my heart every day. i remember them even many years later.

i have on four occasions contributed to a concrit that was a collaborative effort between me and maybe 2-3 other people directed at characters in our games who were grossly ooc. we spend a long time dissecting the good and bad that they were doing and offered tips to improve and word it as nicely as possible. and without fail every single time the player would spit back an even longer justification for why they were ooc and double down and blow up their plurk with really bizarre insecure and over dramatic posts, then drop a month later. or they'd immediately drop with no effort in trying to improve while blowing up their plurk with vague plurks and trying to collect as many buttpatters as possible before apping to another game and trying to bring them along.

in retrospect, it was pretty obvious they were all self-inserting to some degree so nothing we'd ever say on a hmd would make them not feel personally offended and react that way.

it is true in rp as it is with real life; the people most open to criticism are usually the ones who need it the least. and the people who need criticism the most will not listen to it.

i think hmds are ethically/morally important but actual practice useless as fuck, especially within the last 5 years.

never had anyone use my HMD, but i have had somebody PM me to ask me not to tag them because they loathed my canon. i have never seen anyone else play from the canon i was playing from at the time, so it surprised me that anyone would have strong feelings about it.

while it doesn't seem like most people actually get any use out of their HMDs, they take so little time to put up that i don't see the harm in having one. it shows you're open to crit if nothing else.

Re: HMD

(Anonymous) 2020-05-14 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
honestly, i've always wondered what it's like to receive a pm from someone because of your canon! i play from fate which ofc gets namedropped all the time as a canon people hate and won't tag people from and at least some people have said they've either received people opting out or they would opt out if a fate tagged them. i've wondered a bit about how people express this and what they say to be tactful and so on.

(and tbh mad respect for the honesty of anyone who does this. seriously, save us both the time if you really do hate my character or canon)

I got a nice compliment from somebody once, reasonable crit once or twice, and have complimented characters I liked via their hmds. I've left crit on a game hmd once or twice, usually logged in, once or twice anon when I had seen the player throw tantrums about negative reactions to their character before.

Re: HMD

Pretty much all I see their use for these days is if someone goes off about how they're never putting one up, ever, and that IS the hill they're gonna die on, I know they're a drama queen and I have never been wrong.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-15 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Only feedback I can remember ever getting on an HMD post in my journal was back in the LJ days, and it was someone complaining that my character logically should be "terrified of sex" (canon did not touch on this at all) and that the fact that I was friends with another player didn't give me the "right" to have our characters fool around

But yeah, I'm in the same camp as most everyone else here; I have them just to show that I have them / because many games require them, not because I expect anyone to use them

I got feedback back when DWRP was LJRP. But I don't think I've seen any feedback on an HMD since the transition.

i've never received anything on mine after 10+ years and at this point i just keep forgetting to make them unless a game asks me for one
