Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

imo final fantasy is harder to lump together (every game usually exists in its own standalone universe) but so long as you're consistent on how you police it, i can't imagine you'll get into much trouble for enforcing it

i'm excited for the game either way and look forward to seeing your progress!

My logic is that even if they're standalone universes, all games under the Final Fantasy umbrella tend to share a lot of basic traits, like magic systems, races/species, crystals, etc. You're right that it's not really the same as something like Marvel, though. Maybe it'd be better to go the smaller cast cap route for series like FF, and stuff like Marvel or The Untamed/Mo Dao Zu Shi would be counted as one canon with multiple AUs under the same cap.

And glad to hear it! I made a plurk account ([plurk.com profile] tabularasa) so you're welcome to follow it for whenever I get around to putting up an interest check there. I'll keep rpanons updated as well once I make some real progress!

aefenglom actually came up with a pretty creative solution to this.

you have individual cast caps for the seperate games, and an overall *franchise* cap for canon entries that, while existing in different universes, are part of an overall umbrella franchise. this would apply to jrpg series like final fantasy and the tales of series, as well as things like the overall marvel universe (comics vs mcu vs animated etc) and type moon-verse (fate, etc).

Definitely taking notes from aef on that one. The numbers are probably going to be pretty low since the overall game cap is also going to be much smaller. Sorry in advance to anyone who likes big casts!

Right now I'm thinking a game cap of 30-35 players (at most up to 2 characters per player, so a max character cap of 60-70), a cast cap of 8 and a franchise cap of 10-12. I don't think the concept would work if the hard caps go much higher than that, and I'd still like to get another mod or two onboard before thinking about 2nd characters for anyone.

Driveby anon—personally I'd bring that cast cap down to 6, maybe even five if you're going with 10-12 franchise cap. This gives players from entries that aren't the most popular/recent a chance to have at least a castmate or two and honestly, the players from said most popular/recent entry will be a lot better off with a smaller cast (and I say this from personal experience).

I might aim for the middle ground and make the cap 6-7, but I agree with everything you said. I don't want to discourage people from trying to build casts at all, but I'd also like to have as much variety as possible.

Part of me is kind of worried about upsetting people with cast/franchise caps and having to argue with people over what counts as part of a franchise, but a saner part of me realizes that the kinds of players who bitch about cast caps on their massive franchise are players I wouldn't want to have anyway. So, smaller caps it is!

ayrt, I think you're 100% on the money; those types of players who bitch about having a cap aren't going to be the types of players you want. imo even 6 is still a lot of leeway within a single cast, and most decent players are going to be happy with a lower cap because it makes it easier to manage their cast and gives them more time to tag out to crosscanon.

Cast cap should be, at max, 10% of your game. Assuming a character cap of 60-70, that would be a cast cap of 6.

Franchise cap at 8-10 would fit that pretty well I think.

Thanks for added the perspective! I think I've settled on a cast cap of 6 and a franchise cap of 10.
