Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Dreamwidth on mobile

Is there an app? There's no official one I know, but any 3rd party ones that work?

Or is there a mobile view?

Or a version of lj juggler for mobile?

app: no
mobile view: just whatever your phone shows you

i mean do we really need a mobile app? it's not like dw is that graphic/code-intensive unless you're browsing a comm like bakerstreet

if i need to be frugal with my data plan, i turn off javascript unless needed, sometimes images too

iirc ios requires some bullshit yearly/monthly fee for being in the app store, idk about google play

>it's not like dw is that graphic/code-intensive unless you're browsing a comm like bakerstreet

it's not the load times that make it a great idea. the site format way predates mobile UX. which is great for browsers, but in 2018 website traffic via mobile surpassed the 50% mark and DW isn't even kind of comfortable to use in a mobile format. I don't care if it has an app specifically, but a mobile site or a PWA would be fucking great already.

weren't they trying to optimize the site for mobile browsing? i thought that's why we had that down time last month.

(i don't browse dw on mobile often because, yeah, it does suck, so i haven't noticed if any changes have actually been implemented.)

yeah but i still don't feel like dw NEEDS an app

we don't need an app for everything no matter what silicon valley thinks

i would only want an app if it somehow were vastly better than just using the usual site...like built in lj juggler or something

agreed tbh, that would be awesome. but how many people actually actively work on dw's code? i doubt denise and whoever profit enough to make dw their full time jobs.

managing the site itself PLUS at least one app (pretty sure android and ios apps use different programming languages) might be a little too much for them to handle.

that doesn't even include handling troubleshooting and customer service for app users, people suggesting "i want to pay for dw services with my app store monies!" and potentially dealing with fees from that, dw newbs leaving shitty reviews because WTF IS THIS DINOSAUR SHIT WHY CAN'T IT BE LIKE TUMBLR??????, and idiocy in general from the general public.

oh i definitely dont think it will happen i just was agreeing there isn't really a need for an app Unless it can do something fancy. or is somehow much easier to navigate. and the dw team is small so it seems unlikely.

This. Give me m.dreamwidth.org or the equivalent and I'll be happy.

often enough, what people mean when they want an app for something is not, in all technicality, an app. For all the reasons other anon mentioned about app store fees as well as the fact that mobile real estate is a growing problem for brands and developers. there's just not enough room on our phones to have an app for everything.

what i think people looking for an app are really hoping for isn't something they can download from the app store, or something that brings something new to their DW experience. just something that makes the site more accessible on mobile devices. which, despite their size, I would think DW is interested in given their stated commitments to broad accessibility.

so an app specifically probably isn't the answer. it's certainly not a fiscally wise one. but Progressive Web Apps are increasingly common and considerably easier to implement. as are mobile mirrors.

I'm guessing that's this: https://www.dreamwidth.org/mobile/

Which is cool, but not so useful for commenting, which is 99% of RP

Fair enough, we don't really NEED one. I'd just like what the other anons have said, mainly account juggling and to a lesser degree, an interface that's a bit easier to use with my big fat thumbs. Those posting icons are tiny and pinch zooming all the time is a pain.

If you're an Apple user, you can link different usernames + passwords through the password keychain

It basically acts as an account juggler
