Idk

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

i liked madoka magica better when i thought it really was trying to be this deconstruction grimdark show. but after homura's episode it just became another bittersweet love story.

Ehhh. I can see why you'd think that, as it ends up being a large part of the plot, but at the same time even that part's a deconstruction. One of the biggest things about the Magical Girl genre is the emphasis on how love (of any variety) will save you and the world, but here Homura's love is turning into creepy obsession and actually making things much, much worse.

Of course, that's sort of undermined by the fact that in a roundabout way it gave Madoka the power to break the horrible, horrible system so it ended up being a "good" thing... but in the single most awful way I can imagine, and only after so many tries that Homura'd pretty much gone insane trying to save her, which she couldn't do.

da

How is Madoka a deconstruction? Also, your opinions on Homura are wrong. Look at all the merchandise and fanworks. Homura is a loving friend dedicated to the only girl nice to her, it's not about a "creepy obsession".

A deconstruction is defined as a story that uses the tropes and cliches usually seen in a genre (in this case, Magical Girl) to create a world that's pretty much the polar opposite of the usual type of show seen there, usually with an attempt on a more "realistic" (read: darker) experience. I'm pretty sure Madoka qualifies.

And I'm sorry, but when your feelings for a person become literally your only reason for living, it's reached obsession levels. Being willing to destroy the world and yourself for someone isn't actually romantic, no matter what some stories would have you believe

... Or are you just trying to imitate an average Madoka fan with this response? Because I honestly have no idea how the fanbase acts, I just watched the show and have seen a few RPers around. So the joke kinda falls flat on me.

I'm quite serious, actually. I can see why you'd have your opinion, but it' obvious that is not what the show is going for. Look at the fanworks. There is nothing about Homura having a creepy obsession. She is a girl who loved her friend very much and it's acknowledged in the scene where Madoka tells her she is her best friend. If your opinion was supported in the show, that scene would not have been included.

Fanworks are never an accurate representation of what the canon was going for. Fans will create whatever they want to create, blithely ignoring large chunks of canon to do so. Sometimes a fanwork will actually capture the spirit of the canon well, but this is very, very rare. So saying that because fanworks display them as a loving, obsession free relationship this was the intent of the creators is bad logic, pure and simple.

And as for the scene you mention... There is no way, none whatsoever, that that moment can erase or justify all the numerous things Homura did, up to and including the self-destruction of the girl she used to be, in her attempt to keep Madoka alive. Besides, Madoka was always portrayed as being far too compassionate for her own good. It was her major character flaw. Just as obsession was Homura's major character flaw, or a hero complex Sayaka's. The big reason the show was good was that all the characters had gigantic fatal flaws that contributed to their dooms over the course of the show.
