Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

Boss Battles

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
1. What boss fights got your heart pumping the hardest in what games?
2. Was it because of the difficulty?
3. Was it because of your attachment to the characters?
4. Did the game set up the atmosphere (with music/setting/tone etc)?
5. If so, how was it different than the rest of the game's tone?

BONUS:
Your least favorite boss battle from any video game?

YOUR FACE is pretty overrated

tl;dr FUCK SEPHIROTH

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
1. FUCKING SEPHIROTH IN FF7 sdalfsjdl;ak fuck that guy. (I'm not fuckthatguy!anon but I share the sentiment.) also others but I'm too lazy to remember them all. I have a lot of gamer rage.

2. like any FF final boss, a mix of difficulty and the NEVERENDING and that stupid Super Nova move that was so terrible it lagged on my playstation (idk if it happens to everyone or not)

3. I guess, in that I did feel a lot of FUCKING DIE SEPHIROTH because of what he did to Aerith and his general douchiness

4. I'm pretty sure the battle's famous for tone-setting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7wJ8pE2qKU

5. it definitely had that grand feeling of finality, but it didn't feel much different from a lot of the other epic fights in the storyline & it was very similar to the Jenova bosses. see, my answer to this WOULD have been Emerald Weapon because that fight is probably the most intimidatingly terrible and awesome fight in the game but I haven't actually beaten it yet whoops

Bonus: Sephiroth in KH2. fuck THAT guy even harder.

lol the sephiroth fight was piss easy

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I've fought harder bosses since, but the guy wins as far as angry frustrated over-invested little me's feelings go.

+1

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
But then my whole party was disgustingly over-leveled and I had all mastered materia and the best shit equipped by the time I actually bothered to beat the game, so.

fucking emerald weapon

i purchased and beat ff7 when it was still new and have played it a dozen times since and emerald weapon is STILL the only part of the fucking game i haven't beaten yet

seph wasn't hard. i actually ran out and got the all-powerful KOTR summon and leveled it up so i eventually had two materias for it. equipped both, then equipped the last party member with Mimic for a whooping three KOTRs. with that setup, sephiroth will die before he can do jack shit.

but emerald weapon. fucking son of a bitch. that thing is frustrating and has too much HP and will NEVER FUCKING DIE omfg

A good half of the boss battles in Odin Sphere apply here. Odin, Odette, the final bosses, some of the mini-bosses even arrrrgh.

1. Legend of Legaia had a particular mantis-like boss in a garden. I forget the name of it. I think I was in 5th or 6th grade at the time.

2. Yeah, it was pretty damn difficult boss for me. It had this move that could constantly cause the status effect 'Rot', which prevent your characters from using certain limbs. (This is important considering the unique battle system.) I was too young to understand how to use anti-status effect accessories, so I was really at a disadvantage.

As an aside, this is why FF8's Junction system was totally lost on me. I also didn't understand how to use FF7's elemental materia to help with battles. At least you could overlevel in FF7 and beat the game easily; I couldn't finish FF8 at the time because I just didn't get it.

3. Absolutely no, hahaha. The characters were flat and plain to me, even back then. I never really got an attachment to characters until I started playing FF7. Even SaGa Frontier was so-so for me when it came to attachment.

4. The boss music for Legaia is admittedly kinda frantic. I'm currently replaying it and the music really does set a desperate tone. As a kid, I'm pretty sure it made me feel some pressure. Add to that the fact that I was already staying up WAY past my bedtime just to finish this boss. The battle seriously felt like it took hours, and I swear I thought I was going to die (in game) at least three times.

5. The rest of the game is fairly slow. The world map music is kinda simple and ambient in a way. Talking to NPCs in the town isn't complicated. Fighting with regular monsters isn't too difficult. It was just that boss with its status effects that threw me off. I managed to beat it, but I was seriously agonizing over it like the little kid I was, lmao.

BONUS:
MGS3's battle against The Boss. That was the one fight I never wanted to do, mostly because of attachment to the characters. My brother and I both wept terribly during the ending.

Kuninosagiri from Persona 4. I was spoiled for parts of the game and knew it wasn't the real final boss, but even knowing that, it just felt so much more epic than anything that had come before it, and something about it creeped me out hugely too. The mood and tone of it were just eerie. It was a hard fight for me, too.

Oh man, I have way too many favorites to pick and they change with whatever game I last played. What comes to mind at the moment is the boss fight of Stallord in Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-lciW3qhbM

The fight itself wasn't terribly challenging, but lordy it was so fun. TP did an excellent job of making every boss encounter fun and engaging for whatever new item you happened to pick up. Unfortunately for the spinning top, this was pretty much the only dungeon and only boss it was useful for. The other items in the game at least saw some fair use after the dungeon they had been acquired in.

1) The NG+ optional boss, the Demi-Fiend (who is the main character of Shin Megami Tensei III), in Digital Devil Saga 1. If you're talking about storyline bosses, final boss fight against the Masked Man in Mother 3.
2) RE: Demi-Fiend, yes, and the fact that there's very little room for error. RE: Masked Man, no.
3) RE: Demi-Fiend, sure I like all the characters, but I wouldn't say that's the reason. RE: Masked Man, yeah.
4) Yes for both.
5) RE: Demi-Fiend, atmosphere was set up using a background and random battle music from SMT3, which is faster paced than DDS1's random battle music. It's supposed to psych out the players who are familiar with SMT3, especially given the difficulty of the fight. RE: Masked Man, the battle music is based on the theme of Love (going by memory), and it's less a battle and more like... you being put in the main character's emotional shoes.

BONUS: A bunch of early Okamiden bosses, mostly because they're so long and tedious to do >8(

1. Any dragon in Skyrim, particularly when I first started playing
2. At some earlier levels it was hard, yes, and I got kill-cammed a couple of times, but mostly it was the sheer AWESOME of just walking down the road minding my own business and having a dragon literally land on top of me and start attacking
3. Nah, wasn't much of a factor
4. The dragon fighting music in Skyrim is FUCKING EPIC. So yes, it does a good job setting up atmosphere
5. The random encounter nature of the dragon battles in Skyrim is what makes it so cool. The rest of the game, you decide where to go and what you want to do and when to do it, but once the main plot starts the dragon encounters are relatively unpredictable, and can interrupt you anywhere outdoors, and sometimes you don't even see/hear them coming
