WHAT ANIME

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Re: missions-based fantasy game

Well, the thing is that it's really easy for someone to say they're building one thing, but based upon the actual mechanics they end up with something else. So based off of your namedropping of Eachdraidh and your reference to missions I imagine something maybe like Futurology or Acata minus the worldhopping. Monthly missions, something somewhat intense.

But when I look at your mechanics I see a Rune Factory game. Largely slice of life shenanigans, farming/shopkeeping, maybe with some fighting on the side, largely ignoring the missions which really don't matter. At first you might have some problems with powergamers wanting power without threading missions, so they'll handwave they saved up an unspecified amount of money to get the vomit dragons spell and now they speak lizard and they're a dragon king, but after that evens out you'll have slice of life and shipping.

Rune Factory's a really fun game, and both possible directions are perfectly fine, but you can call a game a horror game but actually fail to provide anything with horror in it so it becomes a survival game. In this case, you're calling this a missions-based fantasy game but de-emphasizing the missions to the point where I think you need to take a step back and look at what you want before you go any further.

That's fair! That's definitely a more accurate description of the sort of thing I had in mind, I guess "missions-based" can be misleading? I wasn't sure what would be a succinct way to sum it up, I don't mind if people just want to play SoL stuff but I want to communicate that there would be plenty of non-SoL to do for those who want it. Namedropping Eachdraidh is probably a mistake in that regard, yeah, I just didn't want to feel like I was stealing the concept of their quest system without giving credit.

Ultimately, I'd be aiming for something pretty relaxed for both mods and players. If someone wants to take advantage of that to do nothing significant ever and handwave that they get cool stuff eventually, I guess that's fine, but it'd take a very long time since I'd only let people handwave the most basic low-paying missions, and I'd rather let that slide by than force everyone else to keep up stricter requirements just to stop the laziest people from being lazy. Ultimately, it's just a game, and I'd rather try to make things fun and low-stress for everyone involved.
