I usually collect from -chans or pixiv so while I can sometimes provide a link, I can't always do so. I keep the images I icon saved in a special folder, so in case someone requests credit or wants to find the artist, I can image search or saucenao it for them.

I make batches of around 100-300 icons on average in order to get a wide range of expression, so linking a credit for every single one becomes very unfeasible when I'm regularly cranking out that many icons.

At the very least, I always make it clear in my icon posts that I do not draw any of the fanart myself (unless I do, though those are rarer) and that if an artist finds their work iconed and they are not happy, I will gladly remove it as they please with no contest.

I know I could just not make icons at all but I tend to really dislike how disjointed a lot of other icon sets are so I like to create more unity with mine in terms of cropping and contrast style. Plus, as stated before, greater range of expression. So while I could certainly just forgo iconing for the sake of being safe, I think that as long as I keep things open for the artists to communicate any dissatisfaction I should be fine to take things down as they like. I never claim to do anything more than color (for black and white) and crop.
