You don't quite remember how you arrived here. It appears that you're suddenly in a dead land with eerily red skies. The grass is dead, the trees are dying, and there's absolutely no sounds of life beyond your own footsteps, even if it feels like you're being watched somehow. Eventually along the narrow path you follow, you walk through gates that seem to guard a quiet, abandoned town and a sinking feeling starts to settle in that you are far from home and there may not be an easy way back. The sign hanging above the gates simply says "Welcome to Penance: Home Between Homes" and nothing more. Within the gates, there are the leftovers of what may have once been a lively, welcoming little town, if it didn't look as if people either fled or somehow vanished in the blink of an eye. There are dusty shops that are still stocked with supplies, many with their doors busted out or left open. There are homes that haven't been touched in what feels like an eternity but they still have furniture and the remnants of the people who lived there previously. Cars and bikes are littering the streets that are in varying shapes of usability. The more you look, the more unsettling everything becomes. At some point while wandering this creepy ghost town, all new visitors are greeted by the same small group. It's a curious mix of cherub faces and demonic sneers dressed up in smart suits. Professionals. They tell you that you were very bad in your past life, but not to worry, they are here with an offer that you really shouldn't refuse. Stay in Penance and agree to undergo punishments for your sins, cleanse yourself of all that heavy baggage, or follow your less pleasant greeters down to the pits of Hell to suffer for an eternity... atonementrp is a panfandom sandbox based in a town on the border between Hell and the living world called Penance. Characters are allowed to live their lives and work off their sins by agreeing to undergo punishments whenever their hosts see fit. three ideas: seeking input

So, I currently have a few different game ideas that I've been messing around with and I'd like to get a little input to see if there's any interest in any of them.

1) Sci-fi/horror. Yes, one of those creepy sci-fi settings that's out to get you kind of things. It'd revolve around the idea of characters "waking up" after having spent an unknown amount of time in the setting being experimented on. Their memories of that time are basically identical, with characters having followed a strict routine in the time preceding them being brought in to the game. With them waking up, characters would then be left trying to work out how to navigate the setting and discover a way back home. There'd be monsters/threats involved that would be drawn from the characters canon settings too, and would involve information being distributed to characters through their own explorations.

2) Crack/freeform. This idea is basically a case of giving characters a setting (in this case a shopping mall) and having "curses" dumped on them that they need to deal with. Yes, this goes back to the days of old school crack rp where truth rain and singing curses were the norm. This is the one I'm the most unsure of though as I think RP has moved well beyond this in the past decade.

3) Fairy/folktale-based. So, this is kind of a mix of the two. Basically, the idea is for characters to turn up in a woodland/island type setting, where they're stuck trying to work out how to get back home. Unlike the first idea, memories wouldn't play any part in it. Instead, characters would have to deal with periodic "events" based around various fairytale themes. (Think gradual transformations of characters who ignore the consequences of their actions, or understanding the animals around them as they discover they're being hunted by a jungle cat.)

I have causes in mind for both option 1 and 3, but I'm not sure whether it's something that should be shared from the start or if it's something that players should discover as their characters do. It's nothing hugely game-changing (so no, there isn't any "you're already dead" or "you're a clone" type things happening.) but I don't want to ruin a potential twist if any of these go ahead.

If you've read through all this and have any input, please let me know. I'm up for getting something going here, but I want to gauge interest first before I make it official. (And yes, I have my own preference here. But I want to see what you guys think first!)

rp game reward systems

Bringing this over from the last post since this didn't get much response:

1) What would you like to see in a reward system in a prospective game?

2) What systems have you seen in place at previous games that worked or didn't work, and why?

3) How would you have tweaked or fixed it?

4) Does a game having rewards in place have any influence on whether or not you app in?

This is for a game I'm in process of designing. Please keep in mind I've never played in a game that had a reward system (just the way things happened to work out with games I've apped to), so I don't know much about them. I found some good info googling, but would like some specific answers too.

I want to see less '1 comment = 1 point' bank type stuff; if you're nominally active you can rack up a ton of points and it makes the whole thing less rewarding. Make players either complete threads (ideally) or reach X number of comments before they can get a reward. (You should expect that if you set a minimum, 90% of people will reach the minimum and then drop the thread.)

The whole system should encourage players to engage with each other and the plot/setting ON TOP OF basic AC. You shouldn't get brownies for doing the bare minimum. If you're building a sci-fi game, and characters are going to be rewarded for killing a monster in some space station, then the reward should only be given if they thread out the monster encounter; not 'talking about killing the monster' or 'preparing to go into the space station' or 'angstily smooching because we made it out alive'.

TLDR; more reward systems that are actually challenging and rewarding, please. Can I ask for more info on your game anon?

anons, what are your experiences with bipolar disorder?

my new psychiatrist thinks i have it but i don't think i do. or if i do, it's pretty mild. i think i might be manic-ish sometimes but i'm mostly depressed. i feel like some of my symptoms are unrelated, like my speech patterns just being awkward nerd stuttering because i'm a fucking shut-in. i do have a grandparent with bipolar so it's not entirely impossible, i'm just not sure if i agree with the diagnosis.

I feel really petty about this but there are a few people who joined my small game recently that have turned the entire thing into their show, making us all side characters in their giant psl. So I returned to Fire Emblem Fates after more than two years away from it filled with fond memories of 4 Monster Hunter titles, Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice, and Project X Zone 2.

And that last one is the real kicker because PXZ2 and Fates both featured characters from Awakening in it and I'm just left feeling like...

How could an intra-franchise crossover be so shit compared to one handled by a studio that never did ANYTHING PRIOR for Fire Emblem?

People in Project X Zone 2 questioning whether the word "Halidom" is made up or not is funny. Tiki throwing off the groove of villains when they're trying to intimidate her by feigning narcolepsy is funny. Lucina butting heads with Estelle from Tales of Vesperia over being princesses.

You know what isn't funny?

Invisible Fucking Warthogs.

Fates had considerably less material to write for, but that meant they could've really brought their A-game and we got invisible goddamn warthogs.

I fucking swear every time I give this franchise a shot it kicks me in the balls.
