maybe i’m just old and crotchety, but i feel lowkey buttchafed when i see people apping the actual warrior of light to games. back in my day we’d make our mmo characters anything but the central character who knew all the npcs

I guess it depends on the game and how they feel about MMO OCs as malleable protags in the vein of Hawke or Shepard, vs canon OCs, vs just plain OCs, or as something more in the vein of D&D characters.

If the game says you can app your PC, but you must be true to how they are seen in canon (which with the WoL doesn't mean much I know since they're the blankest of blank slates) then you pretty much have no choice but to app them as The Main Character. Personally, I'd love to app my WoL as just a random adventurer somewhere but I haven't found a game that would allow that.

I've found a lot of games that allow MMO OCs who aren't the big hero and pretty much none who say they've only allow an MMO character who is the big hero. Keep looking, anon, you'll see that there are options around.

it doesn't bother me, but i do side-eye actual warriors of light and pact commanders because let's be honest, those stories aren't that good, and they're going to result in a very cookie-cutter character. both settings are interesting and i'd rather see someone be more creative with them

clarifies before somebody rips me a new one that i like XIV's story (actually more than any other MMO i've played), just that the WoL generally does whatever a perfect hero needs to do and it's not as interesting as what some of the NPCs get up to

The pact commander is more of a reactive character anyway. Pretty much all he/she does is see someone else doing something and then do something in response. They don't really have a personality beyond 'tough, but a good leader'. The reoccurring characters (especially Taimi and Canach) are far more interesting.

With FFXIV, I think it's easier to want to make your OC-that-you-play-in-other-places the WoL if just because the game itself is so adamant that you're important and a key figure and you did a bunch of stuff. In other games, your character is just some generally unimportant rank-and-file person that gets to watch the game NPCs be cool and awesome. In FFXIV, you are also cool and awesome. And who doesn't like being cool and awesome? It feels more to me like you're playing a Bioware protag, and thus while there's a lot of space to fill in, if you fill it in well, people seem to be down with RPing with that here?

I totally have an account for my WoL character. That said, I've got an alternate non-WoL version of their history, and I've also got accounts for other actual canon FFXIV characters. I'm flexible.

idk where you're getting that other games make you a nameless rando. all of the major mmos right now have the PC turn into a hero who saves the world.

WoW is the only one I can think of with any significant DWRP presence where the PC isn't some sort of destined hero, and even then s/he is still fairly important to the plotline of their particular class and race.

I also haven't played WoW since Pandera, though, so maybe that's changed.

Slightly unrelated but I really enjoy RPing with WoL characters when I play the main NPCs. It's a guilty pleasure of mine because XIV's focus on how strong and amazing the WoL is feels so over-the-top. They're the perfect hero yet lack any real personality, history, etc. I don't feel like they have a place in a game but ngl I would love to have my Alphinaud meet and have CR with various WoLs from other timelines/worlds.
