i'm late to get onto this train but here i am

my big pet peeve: thor's not dumb. he just doesn't know some things. there's this tendency in fandom to turn thor into this big "how do I do earth things" dumb lunk of a guy based on a few scenes from the first thor movie. but the same movie has him talking with jane and picking up on some sciencey concepts of hers fairly quickly and thor knowing when to shut up and just going along with selvig bullshitting his way out of shield. especially if you play him from a later canonpoint, there will still be some not understanding pop culture references, but he'll be able to grasp basic earth social norms.

pay attention to speech patterns. mcu thor isn't 616 thor. there's a lot less of that pseudo-shakespearean nonsense of thees and thous. thor does speak a bit more formally compared to some of the other avengers, but it's not 'dost thou' levels of formally.

finally, for all of thor's "I'm going to try and hit it with a hammer", he's also just as likely to try and talk someone down, especially if loki's involved. multiple times in thor 1 as well as the avengers, he tries to talk loki out of his terrible plan before that fails and then okay, time to hit it with a hammer. depending on the situation, thor won't jump STRAIGHT to violence.

+1 on "Thor's not dumb". That has to be my biggest pet peeve with the entire Thor fandom.

I think people also hear the way he talks as like... stupidity with a veneer of Shakespeare, but that's not it. He's gregarious. He booms. He's a bit larger than life, but people take that as having no personality rather than having a lot of personality, somehow.

+1 to the thor trying to talk shit out thing: just did a thor marathon the other day and even in the prison break scene in thor 2, he does give the prisoners a "hey i won't get you hammered" option before joining the fray. he also tries to reason with the hulk in avengers before fighting him too.

At the start, Movie 1 Thor is similar to a brash frat boy jock from a sheltered rich background who goes to a nice college. He's intellectually incurious about things which aren't Asgard at first, because why wouldn't he be? Asgard is a fucking amazing society, the bastion of civilization in the multiverse. They're considered fucking gods on some planets. This isn't the same as being an idiot, though. Despite the trappings of Norse mythology and swords Thor comes from a society that's ultimately far further on the science fiction side of things than it is fantasy.

So when he gets shot to Earth, it's like he gets suspended from that college for a semester (for what's ultimately bullshit reasons), is the disgrace of his family, has his inheritance taken away, and doesn't know what he's going to do. So Thor goes on a roadtrip, and in the process of going on that roadtrip realizes that other cultures might not be so bad and he's kind of a dick in certain respects. That's also why he has serious trouble adjusting to Earth at first. It's not because he's stupid. It's because he's starts off knowing that Asgard is the only thing that matters, to the extent that I'm pretty sure early Thor 1 Thor would think Odin conquering a random planet is probably a good thing because the people of that planet would benefit from being vassals of Asgard, and in the war he as well as his friends can win glory in battle, so it's win/win. Then he goes no. Actually. Asgard isn't perfect. And there's things that matter besides punching shit really hard. And other cultures might do things better than Asgard does. Less he's stupid and more realizing that it matters to try to understand other cultures and that it matters to try to fit in instead of striding in and just being a fucking Asgardian.

Then he goes back to Asgard. Avengers + Thor 2 is him realizing that Asgard might actually really be terrible in certain respects and they don't do everything right. That's part of the reason why he gets better with interacting with non-Asgardians as time goes on. There's other reasons, like how he interacts with the Avengers in something closer to his normal role whereas with the New Mexico people he was totally out of his element, but part of it is him getting over his Asgardian superiority complex.

Basically, canonpoint's pretty important with him in regards to how he interacts with people.

Also agreeing with the other anon about his speech patterns. I looked at the movies and realized that most of it is them getting rid of contractions and delivering it in a dramatic, Shakesperian sort of gravitas.
