We mustn't offend the all powerful NPCs!

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I use stock icons to represent their personality, and despite of what other anons have said in this thread, I get to play my characters just fine. I know some people have problems with it but I don't need to rp with everyone anyway.

dorian/cullen! i want to start playing cullen, and i'd really adore a dorian to bounce him off of. cute shippy things mid- or post-game, scenes involving cullen's lyrium struggle, slowburn, smut – i'm down for all of it.

Anyone else have rp accounts for this?

I have a Link and a Riju, though am lacking icons for them.

Nah, I'm fully aware of what goes into it. I'm going based on what they publicly told the player base. They said that they have no problem with child characters, and that they'd "seen complaints before" about adults threading with child characters. And said that none of the game had complained to them at all about it. They also never once advertised the game as an "adult game", even had an age minimum of 13.

If they were of the same opinion and hated child characters, then that just makes them liars to the player base instead of just incompetent.

Haven't really thought of it, but it sounds like a great deal of fun! Some of my favorite RP ships were cross-canon! :D

Old canon is old, and I know this is a long shot - but I used to play Nasuti (dub Mia) a great deal and I am dying to pick her up again...however I would REALLY like a Shuten (dub Anubis) to play her against.

I am most familiar with the Japanese version (easier to gain access to rewatch) but I am totally OK playing from the dub as well (they're so similar as it is).

I also wouldn't be adverse to a Touma or Seiji! But Shuten/Nasuti is my OTP.

looking for a game!

(Anonymous) 2017-04-09 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
These are a bit of a long-shot, but I have two characters I'd be interested in bringing to a game. I'm looking for a home for Sylvanas Windrunner from World of Warcraft (specifically from the Legion storyline, though I could be talked into an earlier canon point), or Essun from the Broken Earth Trilogy.

I'm not actually sure if anyone knows the latter character but! It's worth a try!

Things I'm Looking For:
- No commentspam, please! I've slowed down a lot the past year and I don't think I could handle it.
- For Essun, I would prefer a game that kept all powers (though I'm alright with adding powers, or minimizing them for the sake of game plot).
- No sex games for either, please!

Other than that I don't really have many preferences on setting or theme, so go crazy.

You could go through more obscure comics or manga to see if you can find something close.

Yumichika Ayasegawa from Bleach is big on gloating about his looks, and is otherwise more interested in being acceptable than being admired.

Reaver from Fable got his start as a villain when he made a pact with evil spirits for eternal youth and beauty at the cost of the lives of his whole town and the occasional sacrifice of someone else's youth. When it comes to everything but his looks, he's more smug and purely selfish than he is openly arrogant.

i don't think people are afraid of hearing no

upthread someone is shrieking about how anyone who doesn't want to play smut is a persecuted aroace who should stick to shitty gen memes, i think people are trying to avoid dealing with that.

you can't really judge what you'll come across on bs or anywhere else by what you see people be anon dicks about on an anon comm. people are more likely to think before they say something when it's their name attached.

one person being a trolly tool doesn't mean that the majority is going to feel the same or be like that. most of the rest of the discussion is going along politely enough. it'd help if people would just stop worrying about the absolute worst case scenario that probably wouldn't happen and focus on the possibility they might actually have a good time. you have a fifty fifty chance when you actually try. you have a hundred percent chance of dissatisfaction when you don't do anything.

ah, i feel you, anon. my canon's obscure and trashy enough i can't justify reccing it to friends... so no castmates for me...

+1

(Anonymous) 2017-04-09 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
it's $3 so i don't see what the fuss is about. it's not like you're dropping $50 for someone to play your castmate

agreeing with the other two anons. just state it as a fact as a nice gesture and it should be okay. just be careful of people who'd app in then bow out

get off your high horse.

this is a collaborative storytelling hobby. writing is only part of the format we use to do the telling and communicate with each other. just like texting is a communication format that mixes text with emojis, dwrp is a storytelling format that mixes writing with icons to help convey tone, expression, or general appearance of the characters involved so you don't have to keep going over them repeatedly in the text. they're shorthand.

OC Nos?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-09 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
If you are an OC player or someone who doesn't mind playing against OCs what are your hard nos? What are things you won't include in your character's backstory or traits? What traits make you autodrop an OC you see on a meme or in a game? Or something you try to avoid or don't like to include without a good reason but won't completely ignore if it's handled well?

I'm very curious about what traits turn people off from OCs or what traits OC players tend to avoid themselves when making OCs for whatever reason.

We generally hear things about OPness, superspecialsnowflake syndrome or players not knowing how to respect boundaries so I'm trying to get an idea from both sides.

i'd love a sylvanas over at [community profile] futurology! but ... the queue is pretty deep, so it'd definitely be at least a 2 month wait. STILL, IT WOULD FULFILL MY DREAM.

non-oc player who would play with ocs

(Anonymous) 2017-04-09 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
no:

canon ocs that are related to main characters. i'll play with canon ocs, but not if they're like the main character's long lost daughter or something. you'd best be more original than that.

ocs that are blatant self-inserts. these are somewhat uncommon on dw, but they occur frequently elsewhere. renne is a good example of something i will steer far, far away from. not gonna play with anybody whose character is just a mouthpiece for themselves. though, this isn't limited to ocs, as bad canon players can do this too. and i won't play with them either.

ocs with mental illnesses as defining traits. i don't even really like canon characters like this, so i'm not about to deal with it when it's an oc either. i'm just not interested in seeing people flanderize illnesses for "look how x-treme and kuhhhrayzay i am!!" points.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-09 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It has been a thing for me because it still has icontest communities that I haven't found on DW. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if they disappear now.

oc player who would play with ocs

(Anonymous) 2017-04-09 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
One of my hard nos are canon ocs that are tied to main characters. Twins of so and so or siblings or unknown kids. It's a cheap way to force cr on someone and not everyone's okay with that or wants to play it.

As for fresh ocs? I guess the super tragic backstory thing. I mean, it's not like your oc can't have had it rough, but if you're playing a gay teenage twink who was diddled by his uncle and is now a prostitute runaway emo party kid... no. Don't default to trauma to try to create character backstories. Not everyone should be Jessica Jones. There's nothing wrong with having an oc with a mundane or normal background, especially if they're a non-human oc. Don't be afraid to just be normal or not so super hype.

I just generally dislike characters that are walking trigger warnings or who try to win brownie points by being s stereotype that's handled badly, especially if it matches up with something I've experienced that leaves a bad taste in my mouth with how badly it's handled. Realize that all that tragedy you might want to cram in your oc could be something that someone you're playing with/against has experienced. Don't be insensitive about it.

I don't autonope on anything because I think in the right hands even "This is Mary Sue who dates Canon character A and is the daughter of Canon character B but he doesn't know it because she had to be hidden due to her super awesome powers..." can be done in an interesting way.

That said, immediate 'on probation':

-related to canon characters in more than a passing way
-beautiful crossdressing boys
-rape-as-backstory
-characters whose main personality trait is 'gay'
-angel/demon anything
-Starfire-style 'worldbuilding centered around my kinks' (oh, people from her planet just walk around naked ALL THE TIME. It's not sexual!) in non-smut games

SA (for the record - I play with OCs and the only reason I don't play my OCs is because they're poorly suited for the format and/or not well-developed enough.)
