because villains are generally less cyclical - heroes are the ones who change and grow with the times, but the threats stay the same. There's been like seventeen batmen, and maybe three jokers. There's been a bunch of spider-mans, but only one Doctor Octopus.

part of this is that insights into a supervillain's non-costumed life are much rarer. black spider-man is interesting because half of any given issue of spider-man is him bumming around new york and playing basketball with elementary school kids, or whatever. you don't see kingpin playing basketball with elementary school kids.

the exceptions to this - villains who have had a few identity changes over the years - are, not coincidentally, villains that are popular enough and nuanced enough to have had solo series before, or even be considered anti-heroes. Lady Venom and Lady Loki, as two random examples.

Another part of it is that, while I don't want to say that changing a superhero's race or gender is solely a marketing move - there are interesting stories that have been told with those changes - it is definitely an aspect of them. That isn't really a bad thing, in moderation, comic books are a business after all, but it does mean that characters who aren't really part of the 'marketing' are less likely to get these sorts of changes. people might like the green goblin, but nobody is going to make an article about how we should cast forest whitaker as norman osborne.

it's mostly a marketing move in the case of the MCU.

and I blame the awesomeness that was black fury for that.

black joker would be the one edgy and interesting thing you could do with the character, at this point

granted it'd be super easy to have that go terribly wrong, but still

he's a fucking clown. you could maaaaaaybe get away with it if he was wearing the face of a dude who had looked like the joker, but look at loledgy leto joker and tell me they could use that kind of nuance effectively.

This sort of reminded me that Billy Dee Williams once played Harvey Dent. Dude got screwed over. He would have a great job if they'd brought him back instead of recasting.

Billy Dee is the reason Harv/Two Face was black in BTAS, too, which people also seem to be forgetting about for some reason.

easy to see why he comes off as black. i always thought of him as black/mixed.

i guess samurai jack must be black and not japanese since he was voiced by a black guy, if the race of voice actors is supposed to matter.

and btas was *never* good in differentiating skintone. he's still clearly darker in most other scenes, especially compared to pamela in the first episode he was a feature character in, or to his wife in later episodes. he's black, anon.

if it absolutely has no bearing, steven u threads should be significant shorter to flatview.

i guess i can kind of see it after staring closely at a dozen google images, but i think the animation was terrible if it was trying to actually convey that this was a black character. if other people seem to ignore the fact that btas dent was black, like op said, it's possible that they've just not known for the past 25 years like me.

because zendaya is hot, kingpin is already defeated in the marvel tv verse, and they probably won't include the osbornes or flash thanks to their prevalence in the TASM verse
