Ticky tack clicky clack

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Anon, there's a whole world of employment that doesn't include retail.

Try it sometime. You might end up happier.

Lmfao right

Rp anons likes to talk about how we're all real adults, and they'd theoretically be working office jobs that don't have subday hours

not for nothin' anon, but the job market hasn't exactly improved even with the economy in recovery.

it takes more than a few years for something like that to pick up. there haven't been a massive influx of new jobs, particularly with a lot of places closing shop and jobs being consolidated. new markets and opportunities have to come up and society isn't exactly shrinking. we have more people than jobs available, but the answer is always 'get a job', and that's just not feasible (especially in certain areas where there are finite amount of jobs and more people and you're just waiting for someone to cycle out and die.)

I live in a small town and a lot of jobs that were considered Shitty Jobs For Teens are being done by people 50+ because they can't afford not to work. Fast food places around here each have at least 2 people who are 40+ and the grocery and retail stores have tons of older people working. The only reason positions open up are because younger employees have to leave to go to school or can't work as many hours.

Most of the "good" jobs around here are held by older people who can't or won't quit and all that's left are those smalltime jobs. Even then, for every job that opens up there are 5 other people who want it.

Sorry, when exactly did I say that non-retail jobs weren't shitty?

This isn't a binary. It's not just "retail hell" or "corner office". "Office" jobs happen in fields that aren't big business. Crack that chip off your shoulder and look at other industries.

I don't know you and I don't know your experience level / education / physical location. But there is always a choice. If you choose to stop reaching for different things, that's on you.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-22 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
lmao. and do you even know how many people apply for those "office" jobs? the ones that are supposedly entry level and supposedly require only a high school education? you're literally pounding the BOOTSTRAPS BOOTSTRAPS BOOTSTRAPS drum over something you clearly know nothing about. i've submitted hundreds of resumes at this point to "office" jobs or jobs outside retail only to lose out to someone three times as qualified or never hear back at all.

"you're not trying hard enough" / "you can do better" / "THERE IS ALWAYS A CHOICE" is such a stupid and condescending fucking argument. not to mention blatantly untrue a lot of the time. because yeah, a lot of the time? retail or restaurant work really is the only thing's that's reasonably available to most people, and even then it can be a struggle.

i'm glad you've found a cozy fit in whatever position you've got now but not all of us are so lucky, and not all of us are as lazy or unmotivated as you seem to think. take your entitlement elsewhere, please.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-22 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
OK so I get that you're really into feeling persecuted right now. When you're stuck in a bad spot, it's really hard to see a way out. You're feeling pressured on all sides and even broaching the subject is rubbing a sore spot raw.

I'm not saying that taking alternative paths is easy. I'm not saying it's fun or that it's not scary as hell. I never said I was cozy or that I don't work to make my living. I graduated college as the recession was going into full swing and the job market slammed shut. I went through everything you're going through now, anger included. But it took me getting over myself to realize that options were even there. And you absolutely CAN make a choice.

Why do you have to work for someone else at all to make your money? Can you write? Do you craft? Is there a way to go into business for yourself? Most freelancers telecommute. What is your skillset? Do you try going to places that don't have posted openings? Have you beefed up your Linkedin profile and tried to get in touch with HR reps? Who are you close with? Do any of them know a guy who knows a guy? Are you asking, or do you turtle up and avoid job talk because you're too ashamed or angry to communicate?

If you've got a degree and can't find work in your field where you are, is moving an option? What is job placement like at your school?

I never called you lazy. Discouraged, maybe. But if you're in a place where you think "you don't have a job if you're not working on a Sunday," then it sounds to me like you've given up on jobs outside of that sphere.

Even if you don't feel wanted, keep pounding. Give it an hour a day if you can. It might not break today or tomorrow, but it'll never open up for you if you stop trying.

I know you're trolling because anons hate to admit to having human emotions, but (gasp) brown people get to have jobs too.
