Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

taking one day off a month scheduled in advance shouldn't be difficult for any job

also, some areas have higher con-density than others, and if you're crashing with friends you don't have to worry about hotel

well, i can't speak for the always-broke-crying-about-money congoing crowd, but cons are pretty easy to coordinate with white collar jobs. as vacations go, cons aren't that pricey (compared to going out of the country or idk, a 3 day disneyworld trip or whatever), they're usually on the weekend you can just take one day off at a time for travel or early arrival, so 4+ cons per year (like i usually do) still takes up less than half my PTO. if you coordinate well with friends, you can split hotel costs, gas costs, even badge costs. bring some cup ramen, and you're spared the costs of eating out all the time. conventions still aren't cheap, but tbh my costs for doing cosplay outstrip my con costs by a mile.

One of the anons upthread and I think the "having friends to go with" might also be a big part of the issue. I don't have any irl friends who like going to cons and I'm not super comfortable rooming with people I only know online, so the only cons I've been to were ones I went to alone. That costs a bit more since you're not splitting room/gas.

yeah, that one's a biggie. when i was a broke teenage congoing tot, i shared my con hotels with 10 other people a night and paid $40 for 4 nights at a con, took the bus, and lived on chef boyardee, so my convention costs were extremely minimal and i got used to that kind of cramped con experience. now i'm older and have standards* and share the hotel with 6 other people per night, i'm still used to doing conventions on the cheap so a little disposable income goes a long way

*very high standards indeed

fair enough, i haven't played p3p/the answer in ages so i wasn't sure how transferrable it all was

Closing already apparently. Mods in general just seem to give up too easily lately.

yep. if a game isn't an instant hit with hundreds of apps every month, then it's a failure and must close!

or maybe they want more than 8 players? i mean, i agree it's a bit soon to give up on it all together, but with reserves/apps open and the last one not joining until the beginning of the month and no sign of interest since then (and really, who's going to join a game with 2 of jax's chars?), i sort of get the disappointment. the game looks like it took a lot of work to code/make/think up and they got a few piddles in a pond. i'd be chuffed over that too. i might keep it open longer, try advertising more and pushing for more game stuff, but considering the char types and the lack of general interest... i'm not really surprised.

the game looks like it took a lot of work to code

the game looks like a terrible geocities reject, coding wise.

and to be blunt, dwrpers are so shallow that's probably what kept so many people away. if it ain't shiny people ain't interested, unless it has a very special draw like dragon called did.

yeah, anyone who makes you look bad is trolling. sure jan

(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
you could do invite only games as a category, considering some are so big most people probably know someone in them

(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
depends heavily on the job. if you make enough and aren't trying to build savings, you can easily afford to lose a couple of days of income per month.

also, more people support themselves freelancing than you might think.

kind of a poor example since dragon called crashed and burned before it even got its doors open

due to an unexpected mod disappearance, not because people lost interest or didn't app in. from the looks of it, there was going to be plenty of apps.

an unexpected mod disappearance that was due to a tornado, from what i hear

not really a good comparison

tbh everyone I knew who WAS interested quickly lost that interest when they read the monster changes came with forced personality traits.

I'm in my mid-20's and I was raised in a fairly traditional, ethnic family. I never had an allowance, but my parents were also lower middle class and couldn't afford to give me and my siblings every little thing we asked for whenever. That was reserved for when we got good report cards/birthdays, and my folks also always made sure I was aware of how to budget and spend money wisely.

So yeah-- it depends.

i know that some artists do cons as a business thing and are willing to put the investment in for the potential profit. i roomed with a small group of my artist friends at the last anime convention i went to and saw/helped out with most of the accounting-- even the least successful one made back most of what he put in.

but those kinds of people aside yeah theres a lot of people who just throw their money around irresponsibly
