i know what lol is but i'd never heard of MOBA before this thread happened. knowing it exists doesn't mean everyone's played it or knows the intricacies of how it works and what it is

forums are even more dated than journal rp

MOBA isn't an obscure term, it's been used for years to describe a number of games, including several of the most played ones of all time. just because you and some other out of touch dinguses haven't heard of it doesn't mean it's some arcane acronym.

moba isn't some super-obscure prot-speceed pally level term but it isn't something most casuals know either. i know it because i'm a crusty old gamer who desperately tries not to be a Gamer but lbr most people who are in deep enough with gamer culture to know it are either gamers like me desperately clinging to casualness or Gamers

like, not even the republican party is alt-right, that's why the alt-right is "alt", it's alternative, not of the mainstream right. they're really tiny number of /pol/lacks and assorted nationalist, "ethnicist" groups

mmorpg = massively multiplayer online rpg. basically an online game built around classic rpg elements (leveling up, quests, etc) but geared towards a multiplayer play style and built to accommodate thousands of players all playing in the same world

moba = multiplayer online battle arena. often lumped in with mmos due to the online element but they're really more like fighting games (built around "rounds", static characters with powers and abilities, etc). Emphasizes "skill" over luck or powerleveling which is like catnip for assholes who consider themselves "professional gamers". i think some skeletal lore thrown in for flavor?

that one player who tried to join tlv with a sociopath character and identified as an irl sociopath was playing from a moba canon, for what it's worth

but most people who casually game DO know what it is, enough that people can make informed consumer decisions about the differences between Battleborn and Overwatch, which is what started this whole abortion of a thread.

A discussion on the other page had me thinking about it. We have the game spreadsheet in the resources, but even though that's the best we have, that's not always 100% up to date because it's self-edited. Some games on it are closed. And

gamedirectory has been inactive since 2014.

I was wondering if people would be interested in a very simple master list like

gamedirectory but kept a little more up to date by the mod checking in with rpa once every month or two to get feedback to add and remove new and closed games.

The hardest part of maintaining these lists is keeping them up to date and people don't always go to the lists to give feedback to update them, but if the person running them came to the rpers for a quick poll on rpa, all it'd take is a quick check for new or closed games and they could get enough feedback to keep them pretty up to date. And if it was only once every month or two, and was kept a simple list, it wouldn't be that much work.

If I started that, would anyone find that useful? And would rpa mind the once monthly or every two month check-in with rpa?

no one did that. an anon came in and insisted because they didn't know, it was therefore a minute difference that no one would know.

maybe two or three comments in this whole thread are people genuinely asking about anything, the rest are people acting like you have to be a basement dwelling nerdlord to know what major game genres are.

it's more like a competitive RTS (real time strategy, think Starcraft or Command & Conqueror and its ilk) played in teams, where you don't have to build much, but you still gotta summon soldier and shit.

yeah, the level of involvement required of the player is what's gonna make the big difference in who which game appeals to. Battleborn is definitely for the types who already like games like LoL or DOTA, whereas Overwatch is way more about loadout and jumping right in and shooting shit.

a normie might play a moba game but if asked to define moba 9 out of 10 of them are going to give you blank stares
