Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

if there was a more active dr back in the lj days, i'm all ears

memebells had a decent run but it came at the tail end of things, wasn't even open a year before the exodus happened and from there bakerstreet quickly supplanted it

try zenmate

and if you don't care about them doing some illegal shit with your connection, then hola

because he made a video designed to attract clicks and cited reasoning he has absolutely excused for other films, and then went on to do a series about the original GB3, the movie that the screaming neckbeards have praised as their lost ark.

dude's a controversy exploiting sarkeesian-style shill at best and an outright sexist at worst. he doesn't need defending.

Because there used to be games with well over 500 characters and a game with 100 characters was once considered small. And once upon a time, if you posted on dear_mun, your post would be off the front page within minutes, and right now dear_player has the last three days visible on the front page even though it's set to display half as many posts as d_m was. That's why.

Also, the anon above is right to say that it's easy to be isolated from the bleedoff in games, but at the same time the average number of characters and players in a game is shrinking even though the average number of games is also shrinking. So it's not even invisible in games, it's just happening more slowly.

Seriously, DWRP is dying in the same way a lot of things with aging and somewhat stagnant core audiences/users are "dying." That's not to say it isn't getting any new players at all, but it's getting fewer than it's losing.

As far as "screaming neckbeards" go, I wasn't aware we're supposed to like soulless reboots now

I didn't grow up with Ghostbusters so I don't have strong feelings either way but honestly, you don't need to be any kind of neckbeard to think "Bridesmaids"-style humor is bad. I can't imagine what it must be like for people who did love GB.

sometimes ducks are really beautiful swans anon

i mean really, i don't care if you don't like bill maher, but to stick him in the same political camp as someone like ann coulter or milo is ignorant at best

ATP is up. There's the game ads section. Not everything is on there but most games advertise.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, thank you! it seems to be up to date considering the edit was recent but the fact that it's open to editing has me questioning its reliability

the other anon oversimplified it, tbh. you can generally spot a MOBA game pretty easily, but the problem is there actually aren't a whole lot of them.

Defense of the Ancients 2, Guilty Gear Overture, League of Legends, and now Battleborn are literally the only games I can recall that actually have all of the needed elements to make a MOBA.

but to put it in easy terms that aren't just taken from vague wiki articles;

in a MOBA, you select your player character (or champion, as they're called traditionally) and you use your set of skills and whatever mobs of soldiers/servants you can summon to basically take over a given map and eventually stick your flag in the enemy's base or whatever other winning conditions have been set.

the big difference between MOBAs and other games are the summoned mobs of soldiers/slaves, the "lanes" maps are divided into and thus set the flow of gameplay, and that your character or chapion levels up and gains new skills and stuff as you play (as opposed to a fixed skill set) but resets after the round is one or lost.

they're like a combination of real time strategy games like og Warcraft (which is where MOBAs got their start, Warcraft mods) and action RPGs.

so in this case, Battleborn is super different from Overwatch. Overwatch is a team-based shooting game. Character skillsets are largely fixed (though I think mid-game upgrades happen, too? don't quote me on that), there are no mobs to contend with, and maps are divided into the typical point control style gameplay you'd get in a game like Team Foretress 2 or Battlefront (and I think they have a capture-the-flag style map type, too).

they wouldn't appeal to the same players, because aside from the first person perspective, the play approach is very different in each.

like below anon said there's links to an account and a google doc on the resources page, but the former is inactive while the latter is open to edits. wish there was still an updated journal/comm for it...

take this quiz from seven years ago and tell us what you get

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
you would rather leave it to one person who could easily fall behind or miss the existence of a new game or the closing of an old one?

if all you think makes a MOBA is having enemies to kill besides player characters, then that's on you, mate. other people, yes even casual gamers, get it just fine once they actually look at a MOBA game.

if my boss at work can tell the difference between overwatch and battleborn, and he isn't a gamer by a long shot, you can too buddy. I believe in you.

easier to go right to a masterlist than to dig through game ads, atp, and even game discussions for everything, though.

it's not like it's impossible to find games, but it's just bothersome.

+1

shame on all of these anons for not getting the reference

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
not necessarily. i'm just averse to open-edits on anything due to the risk of someone making an incorrect edit (purposely or not) that nobody catches. better than missing out on shit, though.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
did you ever stop to think maybe just constant over-exposed meme RP is dying?

oh, that's true, i did forget about dear_multiverse (and what was the other big one, milliways?)

actually this comment got me curious about whether i had misjudged sws's importance so i went back to the old lj comms and copied the data relevant to our interests, presented below for you and anyone else interested in rp history

AGE: DEAR MUN and MILLIWAYS are the oldest drs, being created in january and june of 2004 respectively. DEAR MULTIVERSE is next, it was created in 2005 and SIXWORDSTORIES is the youngest of the bunch as it was created in 2006. so in terms of age you're right, sixwordstories was definitely not one of the founding drs

ACTIVITY: here's where SIXWORDSTORIES wins by a wide margin, it has 8,748,326 comments and 282,100 posts, the most for any dr presented here by a landslide. DEAR MUN takes second place with 5,155,763 comments and 172,335 journal entries, and MILLIWAYS takes the bronze with 4,300,830 comments and 93,289. in terms of activity poor DEAR MULTIVERSE is an also-ran, it clocks in at only 1,173,564 comments and 19,851 journal entries.

CONCLUSION: sixwordstories is what i thought it was in that it saw the most traffic in its day, but dear_mun and milliways were the drs that came first. dear_multiverse's numbers surprised me, i'd forgotten it before you reminded me but i remember it as having a greater presence than the numbers would indicate.

no one's saying he's supposed to like it, or even review it.

he didn't have to make a click-generating, money printing video just to announce that, and furthermore state reasoning he has absolutely gone against for other reboots. it's not like we're saying you're supposed to like soulless reboots, but if you have a track record of accepting them, don't turn around and say "I hate soulless reboots" when suddenly it's women in the jumpsuits.

you're allowed to not like the film, not see it, whatever. you're not a sexist for it. but when we're talking about the cinemassacre dude? there is absolutely reason for calling him out on some bullshit.

define "over-exposed" please

if you mean "gets scrutinized by anoncomms" that's literally all of dwrp except private museboxes
