Trapped in the city of one loo

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Re: APP THIS PLZ / ENABLE ME - picking muses

hi! i'm new to rp and would really like to get into it; any advice about picking characters? (i hope this is the right place/thread to ask)

i have never identified with a character (that i would be comfortable playing) and the characters i like are all different enough from me that i don't think i can keep them IC. how do you pick a muse for which you're confident 'i know what they would think/do in this or this scenario'?

Hi there!

Honestly, I think you're better off starting with a character who is fairly different from you. When you play a character you identify closely with, it's easy to slip into a habit of responding as yourself, and maintaining the ic/ooc boundary (that is, remembering that your character is not you and what your character does/who your character likes/etc doesn't reflect your personal actions and feelings) is harder.

My advice would be to pick a character you love and are excited about, and then put effort into getting their characterization right, rather than picking a character who you identify with but aren't comfortable playing.

When I'm picking up a new character, I always like to go back to their canon and pay close attention to three things.

1) Viewpoint. How does this character see the world? Are they trusting or suspicious? Oblivious or perceptive? What are their preconceived beliefs? Some of this you can tell by watching the way they interact with other people in their canon, and some of it may come from dialogue or internal monologue/narration. This will determine how they respond to new characters and situations.

2) Motivation. What do they want? What do they want to do? Are there things they feel strongly about never doing? If you keep your character's motivations in mind, you'll have a much easier time deciding on their actions. I recommend coming up with a specific goal for your character in every thread you write, something that jibes with their overall motivation, and making sure your individual tags move your character towards achieving their goal.

3) Voice. This covers how they express themselves physically and verbally. Do they gesture while they talk? How much personal space do they have and how do they act when someone invades it/they invade someone else's? Do they speak casually or formally? Use advanced vocabulary, slang, or both? Voice can be tricky if you're working with a translation, but as long as you're consistent and it feels true to the character, you're golden.
