Trapped in the city of one loo

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Or retail, or customer service or really anything that isn't a 9 to 5 job in an office.

idk about in the states, but a lot of large(r) retailers here are closed on easter sunday, so i think that restaurant/caterershave it arguably harder than retailers when it comes to public holidays — esp. since a number of restaurants etc. will still be open on xmas day as well.

retail is shit, yes, but food can be fucking awful

depends on your retail chain, but i've found retail > food in most ways since getting out of it.

In the states it depends on the retailer and also the state you live in, but most only close for xmas and some not even then.

But the worst is customer service. Not only will you work pretty much every holiday there, but it can be especially busy and there's no way in hell you are getting the day off. And if you happen to get sick that day, you need a doctor's note to not get fired for it.

customer service in what respect? idk if it's maybe culture differences, but I always thought that customer service = anything that is customer facing at all, which covers front of house retail jobs.

retailers here require doctor notes for calls in sick on days that are public holidays for exactly the same reason. I'd wager food service requires exactly the same thing as public holidays = when people want to go out to eat. they're busy too, man.

customers are shitty, retailers are generally shitty, but food service is a fucking beast. having worked both, I would sooner go back to a customer facing retail role than food service, whether it's front of house or back of house — if nothing else, retail has better hours.

I mean reps on support lines. Like when you call up to pay a bill or to get tech support. Most of those are open normal hours on holidays, including xmas.

Also, the doctor's note for being sick on a holiday isn't always just the holiday too. I've actually dealt with a job in this industry that required documentation for any absence from Thanksgiving until after New Year's. Needless to say I no longer work there because that was just insanity.

oh, that makes sense! I did wonder if that's what you meant, but in my mind customer service is everything customer facing, rather than specifically customer support so I wasn't sure if there was some other role that I was missing.

that is absolutely ridiculous, jesus.

i work retail and i wish things were open on easter so that i could have more hours. i'm not christian so easter means absolutely nothing to me - it's just another sunday. my family doesn't get together or celebrate it or anything so i'd honestly rather be working.

nah. some places are pretty good about giving days off. i work for a retailer and we're closed today, and there are a few fast food places around my town that are also closed. long john's and imo's are the first to come to mind

I'm lucky my retail job is closed on Sundays, but I hear you. My schedule changes weekly.

try working in any sort of recreation business. not only do we work on days everyone else has a day off, but with the exception of christmas, you're not allowed to take off on holidays because those are the days they need more people. (and when the customers are more entitled than ever.)

yeah, i know. i'm not allowed to take holidays off either, obviously. i work in a resort town, so i know exactly how all of that works.
