if we boycotted every movie with a rapey directer/producer/actor/crew, we'd watch about five movies. just saying.

please enlighten me on some other notorious classic filmmakers who raped multiple people, super curious

firstly, all i really have to mention is roman polanski to make my point, but if you think that it only counts if they've been charged legally with a crime, you're mentally stunted. it's become a trope for movies to portray directors/producers as people that sleep with the 'talent' to give them a spot in their production. there are actual movies about sexual assault in hollywood/movie business and it's pretty damn accurate. look at this bullshit with kesha, which, i know, music business and 'totally different', except it's not. women in the field have been trained to keep their mouths shut because the ones that speak up generally wind up being blacklisted for ruining the boy's club image. most women will keep their mouth shut so they have work, and then it just becomes habit. it's usually the ones outside the industry that speak up, unless the assault has been really horrific/brutal and can't be covered up.

yes, i would. as much as i think polanski's a stain, that doesn't take away from the fact that some of his movies are fucking amazing. he directed them. he didn't act/write/cast them and do all the work. i'm not going to not suggest the pianist or rosemary's baby because polanski's a pedo. he's not the only person involved in the works and saying 'nope' to a movie that has thousands of other people involved in the creation of it because one of them is a stain is asinine.

scorsese himself has done a ton of movies that i would think fit into the memorable and definitely should see category, but hey, he spoke up for a rapist, so clearly everything with his name on it is shit.

look, if it's a writer who's a shitstain and the work is all theirs and it's just them and their publisher you really have to worry about, i can understand wanting to boycott or not have anything to do with it, but movies have so much work behind it from other sources that the idea of trying to 'punish' the one name on there by throwing everyone else under the bus is dumb. dislike the rapist/assaulter. hate one specific person if you want, but there's more to a production like that than one specific person.

and to add to this, there were and still are multiple people in the industry that stand behind polanski and say he didn't do anything wrong. because drugging and raping/sodomizing a thirteen year old girl is totally cool at a hollywood party, right? and a lot of those people that stand behind him have movies/are in movies that are incredibly popular. you want to boycott sexual assaulter movies? stop watching anything with johnny depp (a very vocal advocate in speaking for roman when he got arrested), woody allen, guillermo del toro, david lynch, tilda swinton, adrien brody, martin scorsese... the list is long and unfortunate.

people are and can be shitty. i think tom cruise is a stain on the face of humanity, but i'll still watch and enjoy a good movie he's in (far and away is one of my faves) while realizing that i can dislike him as a person.

they're 'rapist supporters' in that they spoke as public advocates for a literal and convicted rapist, polanski. they supported him and by association are supporters of sexual assault because they're taking the side of the perpetrator instead of the victim. or at least, excusing his behavior when it's inexcusable. so boycott all their shit too if you want to make a 'point'.

Don't forget Mel Gibson. He's a piece of shit covered in more shit and topped with a turd cherry, but he's given some damn good performances.

he is such a dick, but yeah, he has some pretty memorable movies. braveheart's a fave and i'm not ashamed to admit i still love the lethal weapon series.

point is, there's a ton of shitty people in the entertainment business. like, real fucking losers that are horrible people and it'd be nice to see them go bye bye. but i'm still going to enjoy some of what they do, because it's not just a mel gibson work or a tom cruise work or a woody allen piece. if people want to take that kind of stance, that's their right and i won't fault them for it, but expecting to have their stance become 'the opinion of fact, therefore you're a shitty asshole if you do otherwise' is one of those things that bothers me because it lines up with 'if you do this thing my religion says is wrong, you're wrong' or any other thing where someone's personal beliefs are pushed onto other people. you do you. everyone should. but give your opinion and then let other people make their own decision on what they want to do.

like doesn't mean exactly the same, idiot. you can compare things and not have them be traced outlines of each other. someone saying that their opinion on something like this is the one true opinion is the same as someone saying that their religious views are the one true view. have your view. opinion all you want. but don't sit here and shit on other people for not having the same opinion and calling them rapist supporters for watching something with a dick in the procedure.
