Trapped in the city of one loo

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

okay, so seconding another anon that was asking you about eras. since you didn't specify, i'm going to try and give you at least one must-see (in my opinion) per decade from the '20's to the '70's. i didn't know what genres you were interested in either, so have a smorgasbord there as well.

"the unknown" --lon chaney silent, extremely disturbing horror film about an obsessed circus performer.

"the informer" --ira member rats out his friend to the british and suffers the consequences.

"johnny eager," "the glass key (1942, haven't seen the original)," "the locket," --okay, three pieces of film noir from the '40's, all of which will probably help you get a feel for what noir is about. "johnny eager" has a closeted gay guy in its supporting cast (with a crush on robert taylor, no less), so if you pick one from the list, i'd go with that.

"the sweet smell of success" --focuses on the seedy underbelly of journalism as a jealous newspaper mogul tries to destroy his sister's boyfriend.

"hud" --character study of an unprincipled man, his principled father, and his impressionable nephew.

"the godfather" --did i finally put a super-super popular movie here oh yes i did. there are so many pop culture references to this movie (and its sequel... we don't talk about the godfather part iii). you will not regret it at all.

i purposely avoided a lot of super bigtime classics, partially because you're probably already aware of them through cultural osmosis and sometimes just being aware of them lessens the impact of seeing them, even if it's for the first time. for every movie i put up there are about a dozen others that're just as deserving.

tl;dr i love movies and i hope you come to love them too.
