Trapped in the city of one loo

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I hate it even when it's something that is more popular. It's just shitty to assume that everyone knows a term specific to a particular canon or hobby.

I dunno. Sometimes having it explained is obnoxious because it's so obvious. I was in a chat with someone (mind you, this was years ago, back when games still had chats) and they dropped 'fukken saved', then proceeded to explain that, on 4chan, this meant that they were saving the image that was linked.

the amount of people i've met through rp that haven't seen my childhood classics makes me feel so fucking old. labyrinth, willow, goonies, neverending story, secret of nimh, dark crystal. that's my childhood. i might even say something from one of them and it's always a sad day when no one gets it, but wow, i'm not going to rake them over the coals for it. some people missed that moment of popularity for that thing. or it wasn't their thing. chill.

I'm pretty old and haven't seen most of those. Only Goonies in the theaters, Neverending Story, and Secret of Nimh (though I don't remember that one at all). I didn't see Labyrinth until I was in college. Even among us old folks some of us couldn't go see movies easily.

i never went and saw any of them in the theaters (never been a theater kid), but i watched them over and over on tv/video. i think i actually played the tap of one of them through too much and broke it. i'm 36, btw, and i remember having seen all of these by the time i was 8 or 9. not that i think should, but it just surprises me when someone within 5 years of me hasn't seen it. it's like 'really?' it's kind of like hearing that someone hasn't seen breakfast club or lost boys. like, even just for nostalgia's sake, i'd think some people would see it to see what old cult classics were like. and yet i still run into people that look blankly at me when i list off movies from before 97. it's just a culture shock, man. and makes me feel so old.

Huh. I'm 21 and I'd watched everything on your list by the time I was 10.

Then again my mother and uncle were pop culture nerds and are about your age, so. There's that.

i like your mom and uncle. i've got younger nieces and i've gone over and shown them all the age appropriate ones already, so they'd seen everything before they were five/six. and they loved it (particularly dark crystal)

I'm 37 and pretty much my parents weren't much for taking the kids to theaters and rentals were mostly of things my parents were interested in. My parents were definitely weird about kids watching movies and buying stuff on VHS, yet we were allowed free reign on watching TV (though we lacked any decent movie channels, our local cable service was pretty awful).

benefits of foster care, i guess. tv was my best babysitter. i'd definitely suggest watching some of them for both nostalgia and just feel goodness. princess bride, willow, dark crystal, they're all amazing movies that i've found i still love now. same with labyrinth and goonies. (also add monster squad to that as well, so underrated)

flipping out at someone because they haven't seen your childhood classics is stupid, sure.

but op having a tittyfit over people who dare to quote the princess bride without then making an aside explaining the quote is equally stupid.

i'm pretty limited in what i like to watch/read, so even a lot of popular stuff isn't something i'm aware of. and it just annoys me when some chuckling homunculus comes along to guffaw at me with a 'god, don't you even watch x?'

no, no i don't. that doesn't make me stupid and i hate that fucking unspoken implication it does.

even if I do know it, people who repeatedly reference shit are obnoxious tryhards
