LOTS OF DAREDEVIL S2 SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Now that I've finished it, my feelings are very mixed. I really liked the beginning, I thought the Punisher was a great character and a great antagonist and I was definitely invested in their arguments over morality but the Hand was a huge letdown just like I suspected it would be considering how lame it is in the comics. Once Matt starts fighting faceless magical mooks it loses the I guess feeling of human toll that the first season had? Even the first half of the 2nd season did great with this, but then... idk. We got to know Fisk and were invested in both sides of the story in season 1, even for the Punisher's stuff we had those scenes with the Irish that were looking to be picking up where season 2 left off in that regard, but then bam, who the hell is Nobu still? Why does he do literally anything he's doing? Even in the dumb fairytale Chaste explanation it's vague as hell. That was fine when he was only a very small piece in the bigger picture of season one but now that he's front and center as the big mover and pusher, that is not how you make a compelling villain! (Damnit Netflix you were doing so much better than the movies in the villain camp what happened??)

Like, I liked the drama between Matt, Foggy and Karen. I loved the Karen story where she switched over into Investigative Journalism and her mentor relationship was very sweet and compelling again, though I thought the schmaltzy narrated article she wrote at the end was out and out horrible (and probably nowhere close to 2000 words) but hey she's a beginner without formal training it's forgivable, I REALLY liked that Foggy moved up in the legal world and I really hope he crosses over into Jessica Jones season two in a big way since he's in the perfect spot for it now, and I also like that Matt cut himself loose because I think it'll allow him to be really interesting as this sort of lone, messed-up, not-entirely-sane/healthy guy because the only thing he has left is fighting crime in time for the Defenders team ups... I just completely hate the way he got there. Also he (thinks he) killed Nobu A SECOND TIME and he had no emotional reaction to it?? Again? Wtf. I know he agreed to kill one dude with the Punisher, like you know when it's a special occasion and all, but I thought that it'd affect him at least a little bit given how much he was against it up until then. Not even a scene with Father Lantom about it, that's the real crime here.

Am I the only one that spent the whole time he was fighting ninjas going "but where's their heartbeats/weapons???" going LISTEN TO THEIR RUSTLING CLOTHES, GENIUS. Or their bazillion other muscles that they're clearly using that it has been repeatedly established you can hear (how tf are their hearts not beating if they're breathing though? How did Matt not listen for breathing in the first place that's WAY louder than the sound of hearts beating considering normal human beings can hear it? How can he hear where their punches were coming from in time to block them based only on the sound of air flying out of their mouths??? WHAT)

And I hated what they did with Electra so much. She was a lot of fun in the beginning, I liked personality a lot and I thought it bounced off of Matt's grumpy dour DD persona really well when they clashed especially after we just got done drowning in the double down grumpy and dour DD/Punisher interactions, but then BAM. It was revealed that her entire life revolves around Matt Murdock and she's literally a human mcguffin. Why? Ugh

i haven't watched the last couple of episodes yet, but i figured the heartbeat thing was accomplished with some other method, like special clothing or something in their blood that muffles it, not necessarily that their hearts aren't beating at all. although if we are going with some "deep meditation 1 beat per minute" shit, there's no reason* they can't control their breath similarly.

*there are lots of reasons, but no more than why they can't control their hearts like that

I think either Nobu or Stick described it in the first season as specifically controlling the rate of his heartbeat, which makes sense (in a dumb mystical ninjas way) if he's silently sitting in wait for a target who can detect that kind of thing to fall into his trap, but not if he's flipping all around and actively fighting like the generic ninjas were doing in s2.

Your explanation would have made a lot more sense in the dumb any-technology-is-secretly-possible kind of way that most of the MCU uses, and after reading it I really wish they'd used that.

the breathing thing only bugged me because all it took was stick giving matt that very obvious advice. matt's... well i was gonna say matt's not an idiot, but he kind of is. he made a lot of the same mistakes and generated a lot of the same drama with foggy and karen. at least they aren't taking him back this time.

Yes exactly! Like, he was listening hard enough to hear Stick's whispering voice several floors away, but not hard enough to hear several heavily active people mouthbreathing literally 2 feet to his left?? What???

this is the dumb comic book science explanation, but matt has to block out a lot to hear pretty much anything, because the whole world is so loud on its own

if he's hyper-focused on hearing stick at a low volume and from a distance, he might be too distracted to hear mouthbreathing ninjas

The problem with that is that he had just lost the ability to hear their weapons, so he was very clearly straining to hear literally anything close-by that gave away their locations. And for some reason he couldn't hear them breathing until Stick (whom he didn't even know for sure was where he was nor have any idea that he would randomly start talking) whispered it at him?

IDK it's a really small thing to nitpick about I know, but it was just indicative of the many problems I had with switching over to the goofy ass ninjas as Matt's only meaningful antagonist force for the entire latter half of the season, and that everything about them felt so poorly written especially in comparison to the first half.
