so... should i be getting birthright/conquest or should i pass? i'm someone who only got into fe through awakening, and even though i don't know all the details of the story, it seems very messy?

basically, does the gameplay make up for it?

i had fun with it? the fe stories can be a little messy in general, so i honestly hadn't found it that off from other ones. i liked the characters, i liked the maps. conquest's difficulty was closer to older games on harder modes so that was fun.

if you liked awakening, getting conquest for the three awakening kids isn't a terrible plan? there's some awakening-relevant dlc, too.

there are people who hate the games and people who love them so i guess just watch youtube vids and read reviews and decide if it sounds like something you personally would like. what do you like in a game?

i see... i was actually planning to play a demo before making a decision, but since they never released one i was waffling on whether i should get it or not. i know there are gameplay vids out there but i'm someone for who watching someone else play vs. me actually playing the game makes a big difference on whether i'll like something or not.

i also lose motivation to play a game if i don't like the story or characters, which was why i thought i'd ask.

did you like awakening's gameplay?

If yes, you'll enjoy fates too. It's a more refined version of the same thing.

honestly, i didn't think the story was that bad when i played it for myself. it was a little "teehee, keep an eye out for revelations!"-y, in that you could tell there was something you weren't being told, but i honestly enjoyed it more than awakening since more of the cast felt present/important (my biggest gripe with awakening was that most of the cast could've been chopped and nothing would've changed, but that isn't quite the case in fates). that's pretty ymmv though, so maybe take my stance with a grain of sand if you don't like what you've heard about the story so far.

that being said, the gameplay is definitely a big step up across all three versions. like another anon said, birthright plays like a more refined version of awakening and its maps are all very straightforward, whereas conquest has some neat "tricks" it pulls out. enemies will make use of the environment, drain lakes to improve their mobility, etc, so you have to stay on your toes and think about whether you should use a risky or conservative play style based on your situation. there are also "dragon veins", which are tiles that you can interact with that have different effects on the environment-- draining lakes, cleansing miasma that will hurt your characters, creating areas that regen your health, etc. class changes have been streamlined a little, weapons (discounting staves and healing items) have infinite usage, and the "my castle" feature is cute. i liked being able to do A+ supports, since those let characters share classes. i'd say the thing i liked the least was how tacked on the kids felt, since the explanation for their existence isn't that great. they're also not as strong as the kids in awakening, iirc, but they're all pretty fun in terms of their personalities and they work just fine as units.

that depends

are you willing to pay 80 bucks total for this game if you're there for the story

if the answer is "no" then fates is probably not going to be the game for you because on top of paying about 40 bucks or less for one version, the game will highly encourage you to pay another 20 bucks for the other path you didn't pick and another 20 for revelations

otherwise if you're only there for challenging gameplay and don't care about the story, i'd recommend sticking to conquest and stay away from the other paths

Gameplay is amazing on Conquest, but this is more a fact universally agreed upon by old-time Fire Emblem fans (not sure if it applies to you, if you've played older titles before Awakening after the introduction). The Nohr royals seem to be universally more popular than the Hoshido ones too, so the characters are likable at least. Story is a mess and localization has caused a ton of controversy, but if you enjoyed the SRPG aspect and liked Apotheosis/could progress through Awakening Hard/Lunatic/enjoyed older titles, Conquest is a safe bet.

the story is completely stupid, the supports are weak, and they couldn't find a good way to integrate certain aspects with the setting in a sensible way (the kids, the My Castle area, etc), but the gameplay is extremely fun and engaging in conquest, and that's coming from an old-timer.

i will argue that the ratio of actual backstory supports to 'lolcooking' supports or other similar meaningless fluff is better now than it was in awakening, but yeah, the story has enough holes to emulate swiss cheese because it's really obvious they were angling to drop revelation later, and kids were obviously shoehorned in because the mechanic was popular in awakening even if there's no logical reason for them this time around, but the gameplay is fan-fucking-tastic.
