Trapped in the city of one loo

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I'm in complete agreement with you there. As someone who's played both canon characters and ocs, if your oc isn't working with the game or theme or whatever then it's best to bow out. Same thing with a canon character that just doesn't work out. It goes both ways.

My main concern was with the person who eluded to the idea that ALL ocs were subpar and no one wanted to thread with them. And that really isn't the case.

you're either ayrt or a da, not sa unless you're replying to yourself.

but as someone in this discussion, it's not so much that all ocs are subpar, but that most people have had experiences where they don't like ocs and don't want to play with them. in an ideal world, they'd give new ones a chance, but there's no reason they should outside of 'it'd be a nice thing to do'. not all ocs are bad. they're not good, either. just like there are so many bad versions of canon chars out there. it's the players, not really the chars.

but when the players sit there and throw tantrums that no one wants to play with them, it's sort of its own cause and effect in having people back away with their hands up.

(pst the header you wanted was ayrt aka anon you referred to, you used sa which means same poster. just for future reference)

yeah this definitely isn't an oc only thing, medium divide is a reality of this particular hobby and there are numerous other games like holly heights that allow any character type in theory, but in actuality are mostly comprised of a certain type. a person who joins and gets ignored has the option of screaming for more cr, but they just look so bad in doing it that i can't imagine anyone sane trying. most people know when to cut their losses and move on

as for ocs, the problem with them is that there's a very specific stereotype about the kind of people their players are. idk if the one anon in here is sincere, or if they're a troll trying to play up that stereotype, but they really are playing it to the hilt. people tend to avoid ocs in this hobby because they don't want to get tangled up with people like that anon (or who they're pretending to be if they're a troll) and whether it's fair or not all oc players end up tarred with that brush

Whoops, I thought 'ayrt' was a sarcastic header, not the same as the person they were replying to. I guess that shows how little I frequent this community.

But I can see where you're coming from. I've seen plenty of cringe-worthy OCs and people aren't wrong for approaching them with hesitance. If people don't want to tag something then they definitely aren't obligated to. At the same time though, I've seen a lot of hate towards OCs just for the fact that they're OCs and not for any particular sleight against them. It IS possible to make a well rounded, original character... I mean that's what writers do all the time. And I've personally seen the quality of those characters go up with the length of time that people have been RPing.

...I kind of got off on a tangent there, but yeah. OC =/= shitty quality of characterization or writing. You take the good ones with the bad, with every part of RPing as a hobby.

and there are a lot of people with this view, which makes it hard for people who play ocs. i don't play ocs, and i don't think i ever will because of this snobbery.

ok, but RP in general is very OC-dominant. forums, MUDs, etc tend to all be OC-only. fandom RP is a tiny corner of RP as a whole. afaik only dw, tumblr, and ij have big fandom rp scenes, and both tumblr and ij have a huge market for OC-only rp as well. is it more difficult to play an OC on this one specific website? yeah, but you can look basically anywhere else for it.

if you're a fandom RPer that wants to try an OC, yeah, it can suck that your main site isn't that welcoming. i don't get why OC-only players come here though (and i know you're not one, but they're the ones that tend to scream and cry when a game doesn't allow OCs)

but fandom rp is the only one in this particular format. if you want to do journal rp, you're stuck.

not true, IJ has a lot of OC-only roleplays

"b-b-but IJ is ugly/DWRP is higher quality/I want to use a drawn PB!"

ok then you're fussy and DWRP is the only place that meets your standards. in that case you can buckle down and put the extra effort into reaching out and getting people interested in your character.

i see this claim thown around every now and again and every time i just wonder "bitch if it's so easy for your ocs to get play in all these other places, why are you so desperately trying to get them play here?"

because without fail this gets trotted out by pro-oc players trying to make a case for themselves and every time they miss the point. i don't care what the predominating character type in other rp venues because if i did, i'd be in those other venues and not here. here in dwrp fandom characters predominate and ocs are the minority. you'd think if ocs got so much love in so many other spaces they'd fuck off to those spaces, but nope, invariably they try and trot out arguments like this to, idk, convince people they're freaks for not wanting to play with the preshus babbu of the day or whatever.

i agree with everything you're saying and idk how you interpreted my comment as pro-OC because it's clearly not

i was saying that it kinda sucks if DWRP is your very favorite place to play but there are plenty of other places to play OCs at, so people shouldn't whine that it's biased towards fandom when DWRP/LJRP grew out of fandom in the first place. of course it's mostly fandom, OC players might have to work a little harder or look elsewhere, boo hoo.
