i've never gotten why deadpool is so popular

he's a rob liefeld character whose shtick is acting like rorschach in the saturday morning watchmen parody, yet everybody loves the guy and somehow he's got more comics being published rn than goddamn wolverine

i'm not super into comics anymore but i really love deadpool's goofiness

yeah a lot of it is cringey LOLRANDUMB shit but i enjoy the supes who don't take themselves incredibly seriously

also, deadpool, jokingly or not, has hit on more men than you probably have in your entire life and has casually mentioned having sex with other men as well, so

he's one of the few superheroes that's neither the 2edgey4u "dark past" sulky prick who never grew out of their emo phase nor the stick-up-their-ass righteous paladin type who couldn't take a joke if you paid them and would accuse you of corruption and bribery if you tried.

his whole shtick is being the comic version of jack sparrow

???? jack sparrow would still be a pirate. i don't get how that makes deadpool not a superhero. yeah, technically a mercenary, but splitting comic book hairs is petty

i wouldn't compare him to Jack Sparrow, considering Pirates of the Caribbean came out long after Deadpool was created. he's basically a ripoff of Deathstroke from Teen Titans (even his name is directly ripping off Deathstroke's)

however while Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza created the initial character and his design, it was Joe Kelly who made Deadpool into a parody of all the anti-hero books going on at the time of the ongoing and established the character for what he is today. Liefeld may have created Deadpool, but it was Kelly who injected all the asshole comedy slapstick that the character is best known for. Nicieza later wrote the character following Kelly's adjustments as well.

tl;dr his shtick is basically being the anti-antihero. he's not as brooding and grimdark as characters similar to him.
