Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

elvis was kind of a shit person in general, tbh. he was blatantly covering songs by black artists and never once stopped to credit them outside of what he was legally obligated to do.

and black people loved him for it too sooooooo

not really? he had some black fans, but there were just as many pissed off he was making money off their music without crediting them.

there are people, to this day, still shocked when they here some of his top hits weren't written by or for him. he made it a point to make sure he got the credit, instead of the people he was "inspired" by.

this isn't tumblr, this is basic music history.

no one cares about black people getting credit, it's not like any of them are on the internet to care

hell, most of them don't even have basic reading comprehension

except that the majority of the black muscians and fans back then credit him for popularizing the music and making it mainstream so that they could profit from it too.

Mama Thorton barely a fucking penny off of Elvis' Hound Dog's success. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller got the writer's credit on that one, and thus the writers share of the original royalties, but they didn't have a publishing share, and thus saw very little actual money. The only profit they would see is if consumers would find out they originally did the songs and buy their records too. So no, black performers were not getting money from his success. The only black musicians that profited from Elvis' success were those lucky enough to get a spot on Tom Parker's tours with him. Who was, by the way, notoriously racist, so that was a hell of a selection process.

This isn't some tumblr-fueled "your fave is problematic" embellishment and digging, this is the truth of how the music industry was at the time. Elvis was far from the only one to do this, but he was absolutely the guy who got the most famous off of other people's songs
