rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. inspired by me looking at other people's threads for pointers and going "wtf" at bad characterization choices

depends on the character

there are a few i play who seem to collect terribad rpers and so yeah, i think i'm better than most of them, most of them suck

there are a few i play where most of the other players are good, and i'm happy to toss ideas around with them

if i actually think i suck with a character i'm not going to play them anywhere, so that narrows my roster down to the ones i'm pretty confident about

better. other people who also play my mains are total flakes, pretentious tryhards, or the characters suffer from "my head is pastede on yay" syndrome. the characters are some bland husk of their canon selves, and somehow every character these people play sound the exact same. i guess it makes it easier to slide in to dumb ships that way.

Better. Other players have shown a very shallow understanding of the character. They seem to think a bad accent and pissy attitude is all the characterization that's needed. (And can they please stop writing dialogue 100% phonetically, it's fucking painful to read and the character's accent is not that pronounced.)

About the same and honestly I think that's the average for a lot of rpers, even ones that think they're better than the others.

I also actually kind of like seeing players that are better than me because I like reading their stuff and like seeing if they're hitting character notes I missed.

for most of them im literally the only one

for one of the few i am not, i do remember seeing someone whose app i read and it was almost entirely objectively wrong, down to the things that couldnt be spelled out more clearly in canon

guess thats woobification for yah!

i'm playing a rare character who i've only seen one other journal for, and we are about the same ic. i give them props for that.

however, imo, they have shitty icons and a really obnoxious HYPERACTIVE HI OMG ALL THE THINGS personality ooc so i'm cooler.

i most play lcws but i'm the best with all of them and they all belong to me

someone tried playing one of my baes once. i found where they lived, drowned them in their bathtub and buried them into a porta-porty where they remain to this day

and we're all pretty ok I guess

average. on the one hand, i don't really care about being 100% ic as much as digging into the aspects of the character that interest me, so if i have to twist a little to get there, i'm cool with that.

on the other hand, everyone else i've seen play him seems to have an extremely shallow understanding of him when he's pretty complicated. i've only met one player who had a deep understanding and also cared more than i do and i lowkey embarrassingly idolize them tbh.

i'm the best on dw.

this isn't to say i'm even good just that everyone else who has played the same characters has made really insane ooc decisions like putting them in weird threesomes with 15 year olds even tho they're adults (in nonsex games), treating them like 2005 emos, using other canon characters as a stepping stool for drama in their cross-canon ships even on unrelated memes... there's a lot of other stuff including sharing the characters with major wankers who have done crazy shit ic and ooc so i'm basically the best by default. if other people took up most of my characters they'd probably be better or about the same. for now it's kinda cool being really "good" at a character at least.

It depends on the character, tbh.

Some characters are extremely rare and seem to only be played by people who don't understand or care about the finer details of the source material, so they get a lot of hard facts wrong. I do think I'm better in cases like those, but not because I'm amazing. I've just been in most of my fandoms for a long time so I'm really familiar with the canons and the character I play.

When it comes to fad canons or popular characters I think I'm pretty average, sometimes worse if I'm in the process of finding my footing, just because more players means a higher likelihood of finding solid interpretations of whatever character I play.

In either case I'm usually just happy to see other people who like/play the same characters as me, though. I don't go out of my way to get judge-y or anything like that.

Mostly they seem equal to me tbh. Most other players seem better in some ways and worse in others enough that it evens out. I know one who's worse but even then they're not terrible.

there's one other person i know of who plays this one character

at first, seeing them around on memes or d_m/d_p here and there, i thought we just focused on different things and had different interpretations. i was so understanding and non-highlandery!

then i had a chance to see them in action with that character in a game and talking to mutual friends on plurk and i realized they're terrible in every way

Better than most, because the character seems to frequently be latched on to people who don't know how adult professionals behave, let alone how this particular character behaves, and so gets played like a 20-something middle class college student. There are a few others I'm on even footing with, and a couple of really spectacular versions I'm in awe of.

characterization wise, i'm about average-- my main used to be a fairly popular character to play, but he's not conventionally attractive and his personality isn't prime for woobification or shipping so people mostly have a pretty good grasp on him.

i'm by far one of the best writers, however.

all the other people who play him are generally awful at everyone they pick up

all i have to do is retain a passing awareness of canon to do better than them

better. fandom turns him into raging homosexual who needs young dick to be satiated, but his entire life revolves around one woman. other players also ignore all of his achievements, strengths, flaws and play him as some one-note bland fuck because he's an adult and not screaming shounen child.

for one of the characters i play, yes, i think i'm the best there is, but there aren't many to begin with.

every other character i play is a toss-up.

generally i try not to get into spirals of comparing myself to others and instead try to compare myself to myself

like i look back at shit i did 8 years ago and cringe so bad, but that means i feel a lot better about what i'm doing now

I play only OCs and anyone who plays my OCs are objectively worse at them than me because I made them.

i have three characters i consider my mains.

first: best on dw. i've only seen two other people play this character and they were both god fucking awful at it. i can't stand it when people only focus on a character's flaws and completely ignore all of their virtues for the sake of melodrama. there's so much more to this character than that one bad habit. from what i've heard, one of the other players got crit for playing the character this way and then disappeared from dw. i'm dying to see what that crit was, but the plurk got deleted.

second: above average/better than most. this used to be a fad canon at one point, so there were a lot of shitty players for this character, so that kind of skews the numbers a bit. but there were two players other than myself who were both really super good, and for one of them i joined the cast as a close castmate just to play with this person. we've been friends ever since.

third: again, above average/better than most. i haven't seen a lot of other players playing this character, so it's hard to gauge. i've seen one REALLY FUCKING TERRIBLE one, one or two "eh" ones, and one other player i really really liked.

i play from pretty obscure stuff and i'm often the only one playing my characters, so i don't get a lot of chances to compare. in the rare cases that i do?

one of them, i'm the best by far that i've seen. that's not to say that i'm playing him well, it's just that everyone else that plays him is terrible. might be a better one up and coming? if so, good for them, hope they can do him justice. he's a funny character and comedy is hard.

another, i'm sure i'm right in the middle of the pack. she's one of the most popular characters in the fandom and most people can hit the basic notes (loud, tsundere, gluttonous) but everyone has their own take on the deeper motivations. it's kind of fun to see what other people do.

i try not to stress about it too much. i'm getting into new fandoms where the characters i want to play are popular enough to have lots of people playing them and i try not to make myself compare my version of X to their version of X. i especially don't want to seem to be swiping characterization from them?

there's a new question. do you ever look to other versions of the character being played for hints on how to play your own?
