pearl and garnet were plagued with negative, unhealthy themes that threatened the very foundation of their friendship.

these things are common in lesbian narratives. "miserable lesbians" is a trope not difficult to find provided you find gay relationships in non-lgbt-targeted media.

i'm not convinced that peridot has a crush so much as fascinated by culture-nonconforming gems, at least this far in the story. i'll give you the bit where garnet invited peridot to fuse and she got all flustered though. i liked that bit, but it reads to me more of a one-night-stand rather than an invitation for a relationship.

As a lesbian who is sick of the tragedy porn and the predatory lesbian tropes: no. Rose was happy with Greg because he didn't put her on a pedestal and it was independent of his sex. He could be a woman in an AU and it'd still work. Pearl's issues stem from her own lack of self-confidence and need to be validated by others around her, but especially Rose. No, she's not 100% over it, but that kind of shit takes a long-ass time and it's been a relatively short time compared to a Gem's lifespan.

The negative and unhealthy themes you're talking about, by the way? Were worked out via communication. They weren't brushed over and honestly? We need that. No relationship is flawless. Showing that communication can help solve things is a great thing because it's not all roses and rainbows in any relationship and there needs to be more, "Okay, you fucked up and betrayed their trust, now what? Wait for them to initiate communication. Don't push it, give them their space."

i guess i didn't consider these parallels because these conflicts ended with intimate friendship rather than romance, whereas ruby and sapphire remain to be in a constant, long-term relationship.

just because the gay shows up in short, explosive bursts doesn't mean it's any less valid than a steady gay.
