Honest question, is the term "social justice warrior" meant to be a compliment or something you call yourself and not an insult?

I always thought it was a descriptor for the Tumblr types who are out of touch with reality and actual politics.

and to be fair, it's still super awkward when a well meaning white person, usually a young kid, uses nigga. usually need to have a few gentle words about how that can get their asses handed to them so don't say it out loud.

but it's really definitely not the same. when a black person calls another black person a nigger, it's to point out they're being a shitty person and enforcing stereotypes. it is completely contextually different.

It's meaningless because it's both, and the way people define it differs so wildly from person to person.

In some circles, something as simple as wanting people not to use "gay" as a shorthand word for "something I don't like" makes you an SJW. In others, you're not an SJW until you're sending death threats to people who draw non-diverse fanart of characters that already have a canon race.

It is completely and utterly worthless as a term.

it used to mean someone who got offended at the drop of a hat and mostly used social justice as a tool to be a bully.

nowadays, it doesn't really mean anything, it's a generic insult toward anyone you don't like who espouses a sociological or political opinion anywhere to the left of pinochet.

I first encountered it as a proud self-descriptor from some really OTT types but now it means "anyone who says it's not okay to say slurs and be a jackass"
