THE SHANNARA CHRONICLES

a couple shaky character adaptations and some weird clothing choices, but otherwise, not bad, not bad at all. Manu Bennett is awesome as always.

I'm just baffled by the decision to start in the middle of the first trilogy.

i can kind of understand, Sword of Shannara was heavily derivative of Lord of the Rings while Elfstones is more unique. it's probably still gonna leave a bunch of people that haven't read the books going ??? over a bunch of stuff, though.

i feel like they're already diverging enough that they could have made it less derivative, though, and it would give people a more logical in. this way, there's going to need to be a lot more exposition on why some of this shit matters. it feels like they're starting in the second season, and there's no going back to catch up on the first.

"heavily derivative" is such a polite understatement of Sword of Shannara, I laugh every time I see it

i haven't read the books, so i have no expectations going into this beyond 'cool fantasy shit with elves', but i'm also sort of stoked that i can get the first 3 episodes all at once. and i'm really hoping i get a bite for a character because i'm as picky as hell and i'd like to play something new. haven't seen them yet either, but i'm saving them for last in my tuesday night lineup.

you're definitely gonna get a lot of cool fantasy shit with elves. unless mtv totally shit the bed with adapting the book, there's plenty of fireballs and explosions and people being badass as all hell.

i remember seeing the trailer when it first came out and i was so fricking excited about it. as soon as i realized it was almost time for it to start, i got all giddy again. this is definitely one of my favorite genres and it feels like this is that time of media up and down where fantasy isn't as in vogue as it used to be. lot of tech stuff and all and that's great, but i miss a good fantasy. (shadowhunters starts next week as well and i'm curious if that'll be good as well)

i might come back here after i see the eps and leave an opinion.

haven't read the books either, but i really, really liked what i watched. i found it easy to follow so far, the sets are really pretty, the story has me interested, and hell, everyone is very nice to look at. i'm definitely going to stick with it and see where it goes.

okay, so i finally finished all 3 episodes and yeah, i want more. good storytelling, good effects and graphics, good dialogue that doesn't sound stilted or off. i give it two thumbs up.

I didn't enjoy the books very much, but this sounds like it might be an adaptation I can get into!

Thanks, anon.

i figure i'll wait and get to the end of the season to see if i like it enough to pick up the books, but i already think i will.

don't.

the story's okay, but the books themselves are pretty shaky, and they really show their age.

there were some deviations from what i remember of elfstones, but they're doing a pretty good job so far. allanon is still my favorite.

the only deviation that really bugs me is making the rovers and eretria a bunch of hardass bandits rather than the garish, friendly, but ultimately self-serving thieves in the books. i understand why they did it, they were basically a fantasy version of stereotypical thievish romani and that doesn't fly today like it did back in the 80s when the book came out, but child me always loved eretria's character.

i don't think using the murderous thieving traveller stereotype is actually any more acceptable, tbh.

Watched the first four episodes, really enjoying the adaptation. Probably going to tool around on memes with Allanon, Wil, and Ander later on after his story develops.

how'd you get four? I only got 3. where is this 4th one? SHOW ME

Re: THE SHANNARA CHRONICLES

(Anonymous) 2016-01-07 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
they're probably counting the first episode as two. since technically that was two eps in one that were released together.

yeah, and even with that, i only got 3 episodes. 1-2 together, then ep 3. where is this 4th one?

on mtv.com unless they took it down?

the front page still says there are four eps out

if you can't view them on mtv, there are streaming sites and torrents that have them all.

found the fourth one and watching it now.
