he dressed as a nazi as a stupid, drug-fueled "joke" in order to be edgy and get attention. he got banned from playing in Germany as a result (if I recall) before the ban was eventually lifted after an apology (once again, if I recall correctly here). bowie was heavily addicted to cocaine at the time and was not making responsible decisions in general.

but the actual facts of the matter don't really mean much to people who just want to get attention and moral high horse status by bringing up "receipts" on a recently departed celebrity
