Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Plus, remember the part of the game where Papyrus gets electrocuted, and instead of being seriously hurt he just sort of gets cartoonishly charred for a second and then snaps back to normal? Well, Undertale would never defy logic for visual comedy, so this means he must have some command over electricity too. And since this is never talked about ingame, it's obviously a deep, serious secret, which means it's probably really angsty! Make sure not to forget this part of his characterization, op.

Jesus, no one said this shit had to be angsty, but walking on air over a character for no reason that wasn't even that comedic sure as hell doesn't seem to be something you shouldn't forget. That one was more bizarre than a comedic visual gag because it had no place and you could have easily had Papyrus walking around Frisk and nothing would be lost in the scene because there was nothing comedic about that remark.

You're so butthurt that someone's suggesting to pay attention to this thing because game mechanics do, to a degree, matter in this game and can say a bit about characterization (like Papyrus absolutely cannot kill Frisk, no matter what, or Toriel will not actually try to harm you if your HP gets low enough, or how Papyrus uses the same order of moves at one point Sans does--when thinking about Sans).

Like, I don't think it's unreasonable that Papyrus has at the very least the potential to do the kind of stuff Sans does in his fight. They're obviously closely intertwined both as characters and in game mechanics; most of Sans's fight is a souped-up version of Papyrus's. Much like Asgore and Toriel have similar attacks, and you're right that that can convey character information in this game, which is neat.

What I object to is a few things:

1) The insistence that, because something could conceivably be extrapolated from canon, it is fact.

2) The idea that because Sans has mysterious time shit going on, Papyrus needs to also have mysterious shit of some sort.

3) The inability to recognize jokes. Unrelated trivia: Toby Fox made a set of tweets a while back explaining in detail that Toriel saying "Who the hell is Sans?" is a joke and why because apparently a lot of people were genuinely confused.

Why the fuck wouldn't Papyrus be having a visual gag in that scene? Papyrus says and does silly things -- okay, that's not his whole character, but it's a core part of his character. And while it's more prominent in scenes that are more comedy-focused, it doesn't stop being part of him the rest of the time, because this is also a story that's willing to shift moods on a moment's notice, and also a story that likes to do comedy in general. Also what are you talking about that that scene is too serious to have a visual gag?? The entire confrontation and fight and resolution with him is hilarious! Him walking over your head comes like twenty seconds after he makes that friend zone joke!

I just assumed that Papyrus walking through the air was a visual gag because I've seen similar gags in cartoons a million times. This character is so happy, they feel like they're floating...and then they do!

Or the gag where Papyrus spins off screen. He explains this ridiculously complicated puzzle that's going to be completely random, totally expecting the player character to either be unable to do it or have a hell of a time with it...only for it to turn out ridiculously easy. I assumed him spinning off screen was just a sillier version of someone turning on heel and walking off without a word.

I'm not saying that Papyrus being able to warp physics like Sans does is impossible, but saying that "no, he absolutely can because he did this silly thing once or twice in clearly silly scenes" is a little silly. Especially RP-wise, as it's giving him a power that isn't stated to be concrete canon.

I'll give you the bit about the angst, though, that was uncalled for. It feels like a lot of people in this fandom are really preoccupied with Papyrus angst along with the more general skelebros angst, and I get the impulse and I understand that's just a thing fandoms do, but it's SO HARD to execute angst well with Papyrus specifically, he's SUCH a bad fit for it. So I was bringing in outside frustrations at you, sorry.
