what do Life is Strange and Until Dawn have in common?

The amount of tumblrinas that screech that poor mentally ill babies need to be coddled and 'saved' despite being douches.

I like Josh and I have a lot of sympathy for him and his mental status, but he's also a supremely disturbed fella who put the least deserving people (sam and chris) through horrific torture porn, hit them/stuck them with needles/gassed them, performed mock executions and made them fear for their lives. He makes gross comments about Jess when he believes she's dead and frankly, no matter how shitty a prank they pulled on Hannah, Josh's was about a 100x worse and that doesn't make him magically absolved of that just because he does it in revenge. His friends didn't mean for anyone to get hurt over a stupid prank and it all repeats as much, they were sorry for what happened, and Josh was so focused on his vengeance that he ended up on his own and isolated. Which he feared, in the end.

A mental illness explains actions, but doesn't excuse them when it impacts the people around you in a hurtful way.

The creators said this story is Josh's tragic tale, and that's pretty accurate. And it's all good to feel bad for him, but don't coddle his actions just because he has mental issues; he still hurt a lot of people in plenty of ways, and someone's state of mind doesn't change that. The player has the option of having Josh realize he was wrong or continue on in his delusions that it's all fun and games, but we're not Josh, and we should realize what he did was super fucked up.

All of this. Josh is a great character and his situation and mental illness provide an explanation for what he did as well as make him more sympathetic, but it doesn't make what he did okay. I'm so sick of seeing tumblr acting like his friends (especially Chris, Sam, and Ashley) have no right to be angry, or worse yet like they're bad people and bad friends for being upset with Josh for what he did.

God yes, exactly. And when I see people get so blistered on the butts about how ~mean~ Mike was to Josh, I roll my eyes. He had no reason to think Josh wasn't behind Jessica's death -- they knew nothing about WENDIGOS at the time, and Josh was completely unreliable as a narrator. And he was perving about Mike's dead girlfriend AND Mike literally just learned Josh had rigged Ashley and Chris up and kidnapped Sam, who are all his friends too.

Like, Mike's an asshole in a lot of regards and he was pure fuckboy material at the start, but he was way nicer to Josh than people gave him credit for. If I have to hear people moan about how meaaaan Mike is for calling him a "fucked up son of a bitch" (come on, Mike, how could you call a person who torments people horror-movie style fucked up!!) or how MEAAAN everyone was for not going into the mines specifically to save their frieeend.

As a viewer, I enjoy Josh and wanted him to make it, but if I were his friend I would have left his ass behind for my safety, if he made me think I was murdering my friends or chased me with a fucking needle after watching me bathe. And they didn't even just give up on Josh? Chris risked his life and the Stranger died trying to go back for him. Getting dragged off by a wendigo seems pretty hopeless to me, but whatever.

I've even seen people get mad that Ashley stabs Josh??

Gosh Ashley just let him kidnap you properly!

I don't go into his tag anymore on tumblr, in conclusion.

Even for a Josh apologist, getting mad about Ashley stabbing him makes no sense because 1. it's the player's choice to do it or not and 2. she has literally no idea it's him at that point.

Mostly, I second everything that's already been said (I find Josh sympathetic and I love his character, but his whole arc is him taking out his issues as destructively and self-destructively as possible, lashing out at the people in his life until they don't freaking want to be there anymore, and actively digging himself into a hole), I just felt the need to emphasize that, too.

RIGHT.

And thanks man! I really do genuinely like his character a heck of a lot (I actually like all the characters in their own ways, though I like Josh more than probably half of the others) and I do feel horrible and sad for him that he got the Bad End in any ending because I don't feel he deserved such a horrible fate in either of his endings, but tumblr has a hard time understanding you can like a character a shitload and still not coddle their bums or not find an excuse for every single one of their poorly thought-out or horrible actions.

There's such a huge difference between "Josh's story is so fucking tragic and I wish he could have gotten a chance to get better and I think he's a good guy despite the horrible, misguided things he did" and "HE'S SO MISUNDERSTOOD AND EVERYONE'S HORRIBLE TO HIM AND HE DESERVED BETTER, PRECIOUS SUNSHINE FLOWER, FUCK [INSERT CHARACTER FOR THEIR CRIMES AGAINST JOSH], JOSH LIVES ENDING 2015!!!!" God help me.
