I'm bad at this

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

GOD BOONS

What are your favorite god boons? Least favorite?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Least favorites.. Many of the Fourth God boons, specifically vampires, nymphs, goblins, gargoyles, and demons. The fog god is supposed to be the 'more evil' one, and yet it's the Fourth's that require you to be constantly murdering to even get the "boon" power to begin with. It's not much of a prize or reward if you have to constantly work for it. Fog god, you do what you need to for Adept, and poof you get a prize alongside more hunger. Fourth God, hope you enjoy constantly looking for new victims if you want to use your new powers.

Kelpie fourth god is just lame. Better option might have been some sort of hydromancy.

Fog God werebear is also not a favorite, as it seems to offer no real benefits at all in trade for looking stupid. Hint, mods: flying squirrels can't hover.

Fourth God werebear otoh sounds possibly really interesting. Prophetic dreams? There's a lot of potential there. I also like many of the fog god alternative forms. More body horror in my body horror game!

And yes I know people will go "Oh anon, but one god ISN'T really worse than the other!" But that's not how people portray it IC.

I don't like most of the boons, tbh. A lot of them seem extremely situational, not very strong, or come with difficult drawbacks or limitations.

Fourth Goblin boon, IMO, is the best one.

It depends on what the characters will be able to use, but I definitely think Fourth Gargoyles got the shortest end of the stick. The price to pay for that TINY amount of sunwalking is something I assume no one but the most evil muses would use, and ice breath is a purely cosmetic change unless they've got a personal vendetta against nagas or something. But seriously, at least give them an entire afternoon if they're going to have to kill a person for it, jfc. In two hours' time you can barely even go from one city to another.

Agreeing with the other anon that said Fourth Werebears are cool. Actually I agree with pretty much everything they said.

But adding, basically all of the fog god boons are my least favorite. Just turning into a bigger monster and getting some cosmetic changes as a result, is pretty boring.

Fourth god's powers can sometimes be a ripoff but at least they're creative. I like Minotaur, Goblin, Demon, Manticore, Harpy and Arachne's boons. I dislike Gargoyle, Shade, and sort of Naga.

Ones I am not sure whether I dislike are Troll, Kelpie, Merperson.... Are tunneling and water-breathing/walking actually useful? I do not think that they are, but on the other hand, they seem like they'd have some exploration benefits.... in a game that has not been about exploration, but who knows. Maybe the mods are just waiting for a bunch of them to ask if they can tunnel underwater and search for Atlantis. :V

ugh I play a fourth gargoyle and tell me about it. I mean I'm doing it because it makes ic sense and for the cr drama rather than for the boons but it would be nice to have something cool to play with as a bonus. oh well I'm having fun anyway

+1, another fourth gargoyle here and yeah... yeah... the only time the skin-eating is ever going to be on the table for my character is if eating that human was already on the table. Plus, it doesn't even specify like how those two hours are counted, so is it straight from when the sun rises, or is it two hours of direct sun contact? It'd be one thing if they were a statue that could move around, but just delaying a petrification is really weak.

If it was two hours of sun walking as a rock, that would immediately take it from completely shit to completely amazing. Seeing as gargs are invincible in rock form.

Well, two hours of invincibility would be OP, but if they wanted to lower the time limit but make it like that, I think it would be a cool boon.

Or make it two hours but turn them into something like the weeping angels from doctor who.

The water-breathing probably would have exploration benefits if it were longer or included pressure resistance. As it is, the recipient would have to ascend and descend slowly to avoid the bends so with only an hour total, they get more like twenty minutes bottom time and can't go super deep. Not great.

My favorites are anything with a really unique form for the Fog God (Harpy, Shade, Werewolf, etc) and anything with a useful and unique ability for the Fourth God (Minotaur, Goblin, etc).

I'm generally neutral on the Fog God forms that add a couple things but aren't huge changes (Wendigo and Kelpie come to mind), and on Fourth God abilities that are either generic (one-day minion creation, ability to take human form) or have time limits that are too short to make them really useful (troll breathing underground, for example).

As for least favorites:

Fog God Vampire, Nymph, and Troll. None of these forms really add anything that that monster type couldn't have had otherwise. Most of the other fog forms give characters something they absolutely couldn't have had without it (wings for wendigo, another animal entirely for werewolf, etc) but these just seem to be bigger/stronger versions of what they already are.

Fourth God Werewolf. Boring. Get rid of a minor disadvantage, or...do something werewolves could already do because of pack instinct.

Fourth God Gargoyle. Agreeing that they kind of got the short end of the stick there. The short time limit on the first ability plus the fact that they have to kill for it just makes it useless. The second ability is totally cosmetic.

Fourth God Kelpie, Nymph, and Naga are kind of dull.

Favorite:
- fog wendigo because nisha's design is gorgeous
- fourth werebear because the prophetic dreams are cool
- fourth nymph because they can make cordyceps zombies
- fog harpy because come on they get to be dinosaurs
- fourth shade because they could do some cool things with the haunting ability

Least favorite
- fourth mer is utterly useless
- both options for werewolves are kind of boring
- fourth faerie because the personality changes would be more interesting as a regular part of the monster
- fourth gargoyle because neither power sounds remotely worth the cost
