I'm bad at this

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Re: RYSLIG

it legitimately bothers me that half the game treats ryslig as some kind of power contest rather than a body horror game.

people are always complaining about 'wah x monster is so much weaker than y monster' and for all the people that complain, there isn't even that much character on character confrontation. why do people do this?

Re: RYSLIG

ikr? i don't remember it being such a superpowers pissing contest when i joined a year ago. And for the amount of PvP that actually happens, there's really no reason for it.

wouldn't be surprised if some of these people opt out of things based on how "weak" a monster is. sorry, not everyone can be an OP demon.

The funny thing is demons aren't even OP and I don't know where people are getting that from. They've got generic fire magic and possession. If anything goblins seem a bit OP magic wise (although the game info specifically points out that there is no hierarchy and they're all pretty much equally matched), but demons are pretty in line with the other magically oriented monsters. I have seen a bunch of people acting like demons are super strong though. Where the hell did that come from? The fact that a few of our in game demon characters are power seeking types?

I wonder what monsters people think are the "weak" ones.

I'd put money on weres being among the "weak" monsters due to their lack of flashy powers.

Most people seem to think that werewolves are the "weak" monsters of the game. Mers as well, but less that they are weak and more their transformations and abilities are reliant on being in water, which doesn't work when 95% of the action takes place on land.

I've seen a few obnoxious demon players (and people who obviously wanted demons) acting like demons are super strong and ~leaders~ and all that. I don't blame anyone for getting the impression that demons are OP.

remind them that a handful of table salt will have them down for the count

Are you sure it isn't just the character type? Demons kind of lend themselves to showy asshole types, don't they?

Most demons in-game are characters who were obnoxious assholes to begin with.

I suppose you could also get them by having a kindhearted cinnamon roll of a character and opting for a conflicting monster, but I don't really think we have too many, if any, of those.

So do vampires and goblins but for some reason demons stand out.

They have a couple other tricks too. From the bestiary:

Demons have have additional spells: Examples include:

- A spell that grants the illusion of a temporary power boost (imaging removing someone's fear and spiking their adrenaline)
- The ability to use the human bodies they've consumed like a marionette, and they'll move around a bit zombie-like as the demon gives them basic commands. However, they can only do this with one human at a time, and it has to be the last one they've eaten since their 'contact' still exists.
- A spell that causes the target's emotions to go out of control, mostly towards darker thoughts.
- They can also make a Hand of Glory that is essentially an severed hand (literally) candle that doesn't burn out. The can only make one at a time.

Still doesn't really hold a candle to the raw elemental magic gobs have, but I can see why people have the idea that demons are so powerful. Hell, the bestiary even says they're "some of the most feared creatures on all of Ryslig".

And you can stop them cold with a salt-shaker.

I'm guessing you are correct re: power seeking. Speaking as a demon player myself, its actually kind of frustrating that nobody calls my character on their crap more often. I've only gotten to really play with the salt weakness during the Rota event.

On the same side of that argument, for all the powers pissing there is, the majority of people in this game don't actually want to play out confrontation...so I don't know.

:/

I don't even use the optional powers my characters' monsters can get.

That said, I haven't seen that much power jockeying. When I do see it, it's less about comparing monster types (aside from the occasional Vampires/Demons are OP comment) and more people just wanting more powers in general.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, people think vampires are OP?

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen it said referring to the hypnotism abilities even though faeries get a similar ability.

Re: RYSLIG

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The powers are the least interesting thing about the transformations to me at all, imo. I think they're a nice add-on, but I seldom use them. I like the idea of my character becoming something less human more than anything else.

Re: RYSLIG

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
i think it's because 1) now we can get more bonus coins and have more awards to choose from and 2) more characters are becoming adepts and gaining extra powers. the balance in the game shifted and people feel pressured to keep up.

Re: RYSLIG

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
But as people have already said, those powers are rarely used. I could understand if it was a heavy PvP game, but with the lack of conflict I don't get what people feel they need to "keep up" with.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-02 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
Power lobbying aside, I would really like to see more PVP...
