I'm bad at this

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

There is a character I want to app into a game. It's a fairly popular character, but no one from their cast is currently in the game (Which was why I was looking to app their initially, for the chance to build Cross Canon CR without the immediate distraction of Canon CR)

However, someone else managed to reserve the character before I did.

The game does allow challenge reserves and I want to do it but I'm nervous that since the other person reserved initially I will look like a massive jerk by trying to challenge their reserve.

This character is one of a very small muselist I have, and my strongest voice for a character. As far as I can tell, neither I nor the person reserving the character, have joined this game previously.

Do I risk looking like an asshole to play the character I want to play at a game that caught my interest, or do I throw in the towel to the person who beat me to it and keep looking for a game? I'm having a hard time finding one my character isn't already at that still looks fun and interesting...

Please help me, anons. I know I can play my character well, and I want the chance to prove it, but I don't want to piss someone off and get into a game just for people to not play with me because I dared submit a reserve challenge.

What do I do?

If you want it badly enough do it. If you don't want it too much then do something else. If I lose a challenge to someone and they play well and are a decent human being I'd be okay with this. If I lost a challenge to someone who handflapped their way into a melodramatic anxious mess convinced that everyone loathes them and dropped the game after three weeks I'd be kind of pissed.

I'm not the type to handflap or get anxious over imaginary problems. I'm confident in my ability to rp and I know I build cr well.

My main concern was whether or not people in the game would side eye someone who app challenges. I have never been in a game that allows them, so I am not sure how they are usually received when an existing cast isn't involved. The existing taken list is largely live action and I'm bringing in an animated character. So I have one game hurdle in front of me already, albeit these days that is a much smaller hurdle than it used to be.

Well, if you aren't then I must say you're doing a magnificent job of impersonating a shaker and crier.

Since your concern is, if I'm reading this correctly, if people who have chosen voluntarily to app into a game which allows app challenges (and may have app challenged themselves to get into the game in the first place) the type of person who'd judge people for app challenging in a game which allows them. It's like you're concerned you'd get judged for RPing smut in Tanagura.

There is an off-chance you'll piss people off, just because of the chance that the other person is trying to join the game to play with friends.

Ultimately, it's a risk you'll have to take if you really want to play the character there, and it sounds like a risk you might as well take. Even if they've got friends there, it's unlikely that the ENTIRE GAME or even a meaningful portion of it will decide not to play with you over it. Take a chance.

going with others on this and saying if you want the char badly enough, challenge the app. the system is in place for a reason and they're apping in knowing that. a lot of games don't have reserve/app challenges, but this one does and not taking advantage of it seems kind of pointless. tbh, i'd rather see more games do app challenges, if only because it both means that the one better written gets in and not the one who reserved first, and because it cuts down on people that shake/cry over any possibility of a challenge. the people that burst into tears or freak out over having someone challenge their app are the same types that are 'too intimidated' by people's tags and wind up dropping/flaking because they overthink everything and don't just play.

If the game allows challenge reserves/apps then tbh the other person doesn't have any reason to get mad or pissy over someone doing just that, regardless of whether they're there to play with friends or not. All they can do is put on their adult pants and write the best app they can

same for you

tbh I wish more games did allow challenge reserves/apps - I know it's more stressful for the applicants, and a bit more work for the mods, but the number of times I have been stuck with an ooc castmate just bc their timezone meant they woke up first, or because they submitted a few hours before a better application is just getting too high bc everyone in this hobby is deathly afraid of imagined/potential blowback
