question!! I'm running 10.6.8 and want to update to el cap mainly so I can play video games and run newer software. I have an SSD, not the original HD my 2011 macbook pro came with.... and I've been reading a lot of horror stories/bad reviews from people experiencing problems with el cap. Do you think I should update, or should I just go up to 10.7 and play it safe?

10.6.8 is Snow Leopard, right? dang, anon. your OS is pretty far behind. I'd recommend updating your OS more regularly than that for security reasons if nothing else. if necessary you can always run earlier versions of the OS through bootcamp or an emulation tool such as parallels (though you probably shouldn't need to).

as for whether you should update to el cap: many users have been having issues with updating. but it's perfectly possible that you may be one of the users who escapes running into problems. if you feel like risking the update, you could always use timemachine to backup your OS and restore from there if something goes wrong. I don't have much experience with timemachine myself. I tend to update my OS without a care and kick myself later if something breaks, so I can't help you much there, but I'm sure there's an article on the apple site that can aid you.

if upgrading to 10.7 would be enough to run the sorts of software you're looking to run, then by all means stick with that for now. of course, you risk running into issues with any OS update (this wouldn't be the first time I've had a machine cease to shut-down thanks to one). at least since you have an SSD you can always do what I do and just never turn your machine off — in theory, since SSDs have no moving parts it's fine to leave your machine on so long as it's kept in sleep/with the lid down when not in use. SSDs DO wear out in time just like any other part of your computer, but only when they're being strenuously rewritten, as the data can only be rewritten a finite number of times. tbh you'll probably find your macbook becomes obsolete before you start getting write issues (unless you really torture your machine, I guess).

tl;dr if you have the patience: back-up everything and go for it. el capitan is worlds nicer than snow leopard in both design and functionality, so I say it's worth the update so long as you have a way to restore everything if something goes tits-up. as for me I'm going to be stuck waiting for my machine to magically fix itself because I don't have the time nor the ability to give a fuck to go through reinstalling the OS.

hooly shit you wrote so much!! Thank you, anon, you're fucking awesome. That's a good point about my SSD. I do have everything backed up on an external HD, so I can revert from all of that via time machine if my computer doesn't take to the update.

hello anon! i had also been running snow leopard for ages, though not with an ssd, and i recently upgraded to el capitan, and while it took forever to download, i haven't had any problems with it at all and am happy i upgraded! it is kind of a gamble, and i got lucky to not end up with the problems a lot of other people are having, but like anon above said, if you have everything backed up beforehand, i think it's worth going for it.

one thing to note if you do: scrolling's changed (it actually got changed originally in lion or yosemite i think), but you can change it back in trackpad or mouse settings in system preferences; go to scroll & zoom and unclick 'scroll direction: natural'. if you want to, that is! personally i couldn't stand it and changed it back right away.

Thank you so much!! That's really encouraging. I'm going to set aside a Saturday to upgrade, just in case anything goes wrong and I have to spend a day fixing stuff, but I feel a lot more confident about it now.

Thanks for the warning about scrolling, too. That would have been an annoying surprise! I'll see what I think.
