More post/later canon than pre/early, but any advice would be appreciated!

I think the easiest pitfall to fall into when it comes to Rhys is his attitude. Depending on the choices you make, he could be nice or he could be more ruthless, but at the core of it he's not a badass no matter which way you slice it. He's a total dweeb who just happens to look better than his dweeb best friend. Don't fall into the "Hyperion Badass" persona, because even though Rhys is a business con artist in his own rite, he's not very good at actually being the ruthless monster he has to be for Hyperion. Every time you pick one of the more evil options, Rhys stutters or panics or tries to take it back. Its the same way whenever you try to be smooth with him as well (be it toward Sasha or anyone else). He's a Loser with a capital L.

Imho, I think first you have to decide which way you want to lean! Late game Rhys is pretty down on his luck all around and we unfortunately (fortunately?? depends on how you look at it) don't get a lot of the story on what happened between him ripping out his cybernetics and running into the free Pandoran wild, so if you wanna go that route I think you could do some really interesting stuff.

Hyperion culture is really fun to play with as well, especially since its implied that Rhys was up to his neck in it at the start of the game. The TTG staff were talking during their AMA about how getting cybernetics was a sort of rite of passage on Helios, for example! If you haven't played the other games, you could search youtube for the Helios missions in pre-sequel because there's a lot of little information that the announcer AI spouts off for example!

IDK ITS HARD TO GIVE ADVICE not knowing your choices, but if you have anything more specific you're concerned about, lmk and I'll see if I can offer advice!

This is incredibly helpful, thank you so much! I'm going to be playing Rhys more softer/friendlier, definitely, and this is really fantastic. I'll have to read/listen to that TTG AMA, I hadn't heard that about the cybernetics before!

I think I have to work out his specific voice, all the little quirks and ways he speaks, but this helps a tremendous amount with his motivation. And if I ever see you on memes, I'll definitely hit you up. Thank you again!

After getting through playing the game, one big thing that popped up for me personally was Rhys's physical tics and body language. He rubs the back of his neck often, particularly when anxious or nervous. He's got a horrible poker face - if he's startled, nervous, indecisive, or scared, it shows immediately. The cybernetics are a completely natural extension of himself, so natural that it takes until episode four for him to realize he should start hitting people with his robotic hand instead of his other one.

A lot of his dialogue choices also tend to spiral back to how the current situations apply to him, personally. My guess is it's more of a by-product of working at Hyperion in a cutthroat business environment than any genuine sense of self-absorbed narcissism, that's more Jack's department. Even when he's being nice and especially when he's stammering and trying to sound intimidating, he usually manages to loop the situation back to himself.

When he's bullshitting or trying to pull some snark, he's...not very good. He's not deadpan, he's not a fantastic liar, and he puts words together in such a way that his insults and threats manage to bizarrely come out as both precise and jumbled. The whole 'because you are a Wallethead' moment with Vasquez in episode two is a pretty good example of that. He stammers, he stumbles, he trips over his attempts to look and sound cool. When he has to explain the shit he fucked up, he does so in a pretty blustering, John McUnconvincing manner; he's trying to justify his bad decisions to himself as much as he is to the others.

Post-Helios, Rhys is thoroughly disillusioned with his former corporate dream. Even once he rebuilds Atlas, he's fully aware that he had to steal the rights to actually get to that point. A lot of his actions indicate that he's inwardly seething at himself for ever looking up to Jack - regardless of how friendly you are to the A.I. during gameplay, he did once see the man as his personal hero. And if you're taking him from before the final confrontation at the Vault, it's important to keep in mind that he believes that most of his friends are either dead or gone: he thinks Fiona and Sasha ditched him, he thinks Loader Bot perished at Helios, Vaughn has disappeared off the radar entirely, and he's probably beating himself up over the whole Jack fiasco that resulted in the deaths of thousands of people in Helios.
