I'm bad at this

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

i'm fine with the genres we have now (although we do tend to go through waves where there are a lot of dystopian games or a lot of scifi games or whatever). but i'm bored with the game structure. almost everything is a panfandom jamjar with a network. except for differences in setting, most dwrp games are interchangeable and the gameplay experience is very homogenized.

when i say that i want "variety," i'm mostly talking about structure/gameplay issues. i'd like to see more au and single fandom games. i'd like to see mission-based games with real-time, tabletop style events done via chat or rpnow, i'd like to see cracky actionspam journal games, and i'd like to see tl;dr prose games where you can spew 10 paragraphs of introspection. i'd like to see games where players can explore a mod-created world, and i'd like to see sandbox games where the players create most of the world. i want huge games and tiny games and dressing room games, and i want mods to embrace the different things you can do with different sizes of game. i want to see games with no apps and games with huge apps, games that allow previous game cr, games that don't allow ocs, games that are all ocs, whatever. we've fallen into this rut where people seem to believe that there is only one right way to make a game.

i feel like we have/had a lot those though.

and a lot of them didn't work out

a lot of standard panfandom jamjars with networks don't work out either.

yeah, but most of them do work out. just like how most of the things the anon listed here have been tried before and didn't work out that well.

so, we say, "i want to see more aus." someone makes an au. no one apps because "they want to see how things go first." or, in general, most people on dwrp don't care for the au/memloss scene.

basically, unless dwrp's preferences as a whole change, then you won't see the things you want to see unless you be the change you want to see.

idk, i think aus actually do fairly well, although they're always small games. there's undergrounds and brave new world and maybe another one that i forgot about (didn't we have one with superheroes?). i can only think of two recent-ish au games that bombed (the legend of korra one and the pacific rim one) and they were both fad canon settings (with strict adherence to canon) that came out when the fad was already declining. so i guess if you're going to start an au game, then it's better to use an original or very-loosely-inspired-by-canon setting rather than a strict canon setting. as for memloss, kyriakos is decently active, and it also uses a couple of other interesting elements that i haven't seen in many other games.

yeah, i know, be the change you want to see and all. i'm running an au musebox that i'm thinking of reworking as a public game, so maybe.

i quote again, most. and, the thing is, bnn and underground and already looking like they might stagnat with only having the same players and as a game you should want to have and welcome some fresh new blood at least.

as someone who has been in ecats memloss games, i can tell you they follow the same formula and it gets dull. it works for them, though, because they like it that way. it was fun for me at the time, but eventually it got dull which is why i don't play in them anymore.

i'm not saying, "don't do new things!" but if you want to see something done, then don't twiddle your fingers waiting for someone else to do it.

good luck to your au game, though. i'll hope it works out for you.

We were 90% single fandom, au or crack rps for ages before panfandom became the new thing. I don't know why we're so reluctant to reintroduce those, apart from people cringing in memory of their old rps

I guess the one advantage jamjars and panfandoms have over single fandom games is they can be larger. If you're suck in a game that's got a castlist of like 20, you wind up playing a lot with the same people, rehashing a lot of the same energies. Or searching for people who might be willing to fill roles rather than who came to play said roll.

I mean I have deep nostalgia for single fandom games too. But I guess I can see also the energy making panfans appealing.

but anon, didn't you get the memo that every game has to cater to everyone?

more seriously though, most people don't want to put in the work to make make anything really creative work - mods /or/ players.

Re: GAME IDEAS

For mods, it's not a matter of not wanting to put in the work, it's the ability to look at DWRP's patterns and say "yeah, if I try X thing it's probably going to be dead in the water".

Re: GAME IDEAS

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
i agree with you wholeheartedly

the reason people don't make these games though is because if there's one thing DWRP hates most, it's change or doing something different

last time i saw a game do something different that i thought was cool and interesting, a few months into the game half the playerbase decided it was "too weird and difficult to understand" and demanded the mods change it for them to the way the rest of DWRP does it

/rolls eyes

on that note, i am sick to death of networks in RP. death to networks. DEATH. i want an rp where there is no internet. none at all. all interaction is face to face and THAT'S ALL YOU GET.
