I'm bad at this

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

i'm starting to doubt going to comic cons/fandom cons now, rp anons. i feel like if you're not cosplaying and the panels aren't that exciting, then basically you're paying $100 bucks or whatever for a glorified shopping centre.

i want to be enthusiastic about the ones near me but i don't like any of the panel themes and at the end of the con it just feels like a waste of money ):

what do you guys do to make cons interesting? or how do you get the maximum fun out of them?

Video game cons master race

I've played so many great demos and been exposed to tons of cool games/people without having to spend anything more than the ticket cost

volunteer or staff - you can meet other people and have your registration covered (usually with some free food, and some cons comp staff rooms). Or run panels, which will get you a discounted or free registration (varies from con to con). Otherwise yeah, unless you're going for a celeb or the con actually has good programming, it's a waste of money. At this point internet shopping > dealer's room 90% of the time.

I've got five cons planned for next year, and I'm buying full registrations for two of those, because they have good programming and no panelist discounts.

Last time I went I pretty much did tabletop gaming for three days. Tried out lots of new systems and played with all kinds of new people. I also enjoy the cosplay show even if I don't cosplay and just the chance to hang out with friends and visit a city that's closeby but not one I go to often.

Admittedly, I only go to cons if I can cosplay. I love the excuse to dress up, and instantly making friends with anyone dressed from the same series as you.

Going with friends also helps, because then it can just be like a weekend getaway with you and your friends acting as nerdy as you want without anyone judging you.

even if you're cosplaying that's basically all it is, and I feel like I'm going to stop going to cons pretty soon. which sucks, because I cosplay and then I'd have nowhere else to wear costumes.

I try to volunteer to run panels, that at least gives me something to do. nobody in the midwest comps badges just for being a panelist, you usually have to volunteer a minimum number of hours to get your badge free, but I don't do it for a free badge. I do it so I have a schedule to keep and at least a couple things to look forward to accomplishing.
