Well

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

FAVORITE MONSTERS

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
What're your favorite monsters, anon? Especially if you think yours is underrated.

Re: FAVORITE MONSTERS

Everything except the werecreatures, merperson, and faerie. The first two are too bland for me, I had a mer at one point but just couldn't work with it and...I hate bugs.

However, my soul would explode with joy if I ever get a wendigo. I want a zombie deer so badly.

like above anon i love most of the monsters, it's easier to name the ones i don't like: vampire, weres, mer, faerie

Like the above anons, I dislike weres and mer. Weres because they're the most generic of the animal-ish monsters, mer because they aren't terribly interesting outside of water, where a vast majority of your threads are going to take place.

I like most of the others but want to give a special shout out to goblins. Goblins are great.

I like them all, but besides the one I have?

Top favorites:

Naga, Troll, Kelpie, Wendigo

Least favorites:

Vampires, Werecreatures, and Mer for reasons already mentioned above. Mer can be REALLY visually interesting (Demyx, Newt, Walter back when he was still around) But out of the two drowners, I prefer Kelpie because not only is there a lot more for them to do outside of water, but I've always loved the lore behind them. Sticky horses 4ever.

+1 for sticky horses

yes. kelpies don't have the drawback of becoming weak and parched without water. playing a mer made me feel obligated to hang around areas in-game that are close to water, ie: Lake Dala or the Vandare coast.

idk why all the hate for the weres and mers.

the only monsters i genuinely don't like are nymphs and vampires. i find both monsters to be kind of boring to design, but that's just personal taste.

i dislike mers because they're designed to do most of their play in the water and 95% of ryslig is on land. there's no water plots. you don't get to use their neat aquatic forms basically outside of a bathtub. oh cool you get a fishy tail! too bad nobody but other mers will see it since it vanishes outside of deep water

+1 hating on nymphs

+1 on vampires, but most of the nymph designs I've seen in-game are very cool

I love my were. I know they can be boring to design, but you can do a lot of cool things with a character who transforms nightly.

idgi either, seeing as there are tons of canines to choose from design-wise for werewolves, and there are at least two Red Panda werebears in game, so they're not exactly restricted. The psychological effects of playing a character that changes from human to monster every single day seems like untapped potential too.

mers can have some wicked designs from what i've seen. +1 on vamps, but i wish players were allowed to give them more bat-like features.

personally it was super fun for me! there are a ton of possibilities, and it can get a bit daunting. if you're having trouble and ever need someone to bounce ideas off of, feel free to add/pm a fellow nymph player @ [plurk.com profile] colorspark. :)

I have a love/hate relationship with shades. I love the idea of them and what they can do is awesome, but it feels like they aren't offered a lot of options for cool designs. ):

Shade player here, and I actually think it's quite the opposite! Shades might seem like they can't do much because they're one of the more "human" monsters, but their shapeshifting and general open theme (you don't have to limit yourself to just one animal, for example) really make them a open sandbox when it comes to playing around with monster designs.

I doodled a few shade designs a while ago for a plurk I made featuring shade inspirations, which just shows you how creative you can be with their design: (X) (X) (X) (X)

Basically, I LOVE shades because besides being a generally humanoid shadow, the sky's the limit when it comes to what you can do with them in my opinion.

Except for the usual addition of claws, wings, etc, I honestly thought they were limited to just shadow form that looked like their old selves. The bestiary entry on them could use a little refining or I was not reading it properly.

Thank you though. You came up with some cool designs and it helps a lot. My character got shade and I've been at a loss as to what to do with their design.

Another shade joining in here! Cause yeah, I was in your same boat at first, anon. Everyone on my timeline was finding all these interesting spiders/snakes/lizards/cats/etc for their characters' animal traits and I was like "ok... a shadow... with glowy eyes. That's... that's it, yep."

But once you get past that, there is a ton of scope for shades to do a lot of fun things. I mean, if you're playing a character with any kind of mischievous or impish streak, you're playing a telekinetic monster that can walk through walls and fuck with electronics -- the world is their oyster to be pranked! Or if you have a character with serious identity issues, well, now they are in a form that they can literally change with a thought. Try that on for size?

And there is still a lot to customize with their transformation -- visually is covered above, but there are also things like their voice, what it feels like to touch them in either solid or ghostly state, what does their aura feel like, what does their electronic effect feel like for characters who might be able to notice that... the list goes on.

Shade isn't as dramatic a monster as some, but it really does have a ton of scope for creativity.

Not a problem, anon! I'm glad I helped. Shades have two forms (not including their fog form which can be as terrifying/weird/eldritch/spooky as you want), which is their humanoid and shadow form. Humanoid is pretty basic, but shadow's the open one re:creativity for sure. I really would like that to be a little more clear on the entry, and I'll probably draw some stuff and give it to the mods for that page so it's more understandable.

Also, around monster-choosing time for the newbies I'll probably make another plurk featuring inspirations for shades for those who will get them for their characters. If you or any other shade players need any help, anon, don't hesitate to send me a PP!

I think mers have a lot of untapped potential. You can go full on aquatic, right down to the face if you want. It's what Cielo did, basically turning into a street shark, and Newt has a pretty wicked design as well.

Granted, most people don't go for the facial changes anyway, but I think there's more to do with it than vampires and weres.
