Well

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

you have good taste anon, and I'm gonna echo everything the above anon said. I actually played Tim for a while and he's a fun one even if he's tricky-- in part because yeah, there's a lot of canon.

basically how I got into comics in general, if this helps you at all, is this: someone recommended me a Batgirl issue that had just come out saying, you'll like this character (Steph). I read it, I loved her, I looked her up online to get an idea of what else she was in. So I picked up her Batgirl series, read that, and then Red Robin since she guest starred in that. That got me interested in Tim-- so I went back and started reading stuff I heard he was in. It went from there. I think this is honestly the best strategy when you're getting into comics for the first time, or into a new character: find out what they're in and pick up what sounds interesting. you'll go from there and you'll find more.

another piece of advice is a great rule of thumb someone taught me when I was first picking up comics characters (and Tim in particular). go to wikipedia. look at the references section. if a particular issue or comic volume is directly referenced in his history section or personality section, then it's probably important! so for example, it might say something happened to him, see Robin vol whatever issue whatever. if it was important enough to be stated there, it might be worth checking out. this isn't flawless by any means but it can really help you with some starting points.

probably the best advice I ever got for playing comics characters though was the reminder that the players on the whole are pretty chill. many of us have not been alive as long as many of these characters have been in existence. nobody's going to expect you to know everything. and they're super willing to help each other out. I had some canonmates who were great people OOCly who were so great at saying like 'hey, I think you forgot X' or 'have you read Y?' and pointing you in the right direction. Because really, once you know you're stuff? You'll be able to help them too. I remember I got to inform one of my canonmates once of some minor stuff in a comic because even though they'd been reading far longer than me they'd never ONCE managed to track down a particular comic with our characters interacting together... but I managed to find it at a comic convention and picked it up.

the tl;dr is that comics players are super nice, we KNOW it's a hard canon to play from, and don't ever be afraid to ask for help! oh and also-- comics aren't always super consistent, so honestly? don't be afraid to pick and choose a little, to figure out what works for you and what might be worth writing off.
