Well

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Question: What visual novel genres do you like to play? How about genres you dislike? On a similar note, what kind of story premises (e.g. The story is about a hard-boiled detective who must solve a string of murders.) have you enjoyed the most in a visual novel? What about ones you dislike?

I dislike eroge games and anything that's basically a dating sim. I'm more a fan of mystery, adventure, and soft horror. I don't mind romance in a VN, but I absolutely hate when it's the only point to the story.

for premise, i really absolutely am not too crazy for stories that are basically "random dude ends up at an all-girls high school for reasons" because 99% it becomes painfully obvious the writer has never been to an all-girls school

unless teenage girls in all-girls school are really stuck in the 17th century holding tea parties everyday

or wear nothing but frilly dresses and delicately hold their pinkies up

or have never talked to another guy in their lives (because clearly none of them have ever had brothers/fathers/male friends/male classmates/etc) and consider them aliens from another planet

or whatever else the writer thinks happens in this "secret maidenland"

I'm not that picky! I play a lot of nukige just to kill time sometimes, for instance. The only things I really won't play are dating sims - like, actual dating sims, just because I'm not super interested in doing that much stat management and multitasking. If I want to read a romance I'll read a proper galge or an otoge or something. I'll admit I sort of turn my nose up at most things with a high school setting at first, but I'll usually give them a chance if there's someone on the staff I like (sometimes that extends to voice actors if it's someone I love enough).

Some of my favorite things to read are chuuni games and murder mysteries (Innocent Grey really sold me on post-war settings for mystery stories, I think it's super interesting) and uh, whatever genres Sakurai Hikaru's stories fit into.

i mostly play otome games, but i'd be willing to try anything if the story is good enough - the only thing i'm really not interested in is super exploitative eroge.

i tend to dislike things set in high schools because i've seen it a million times. fantasy settings are my favorite.
