Well

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. Hiccup | Dragons

Somewhere around the second movie as canon point goes. I just really want to know how he ticks and how to handle his gestures and talking right.

Never seen the show set between the movies and don't know how important it is to get a grasp on his character, so any of that would be helpful to.

Thanks!

ok anon, first you gotta decide when in the second movie. he goes through lots of shit in it, so this is one of those canons where five minutes can make all the difference.

the show isn't super important but it helps when it comes to expanding the world, and hiccup interacting with different people. seasons 1-2 he's 15/16 like movie one, but the third season shows him at 18 (so something in the middle of his two movie ages) and it's interesting, since he's starting to become more leader like, plus we see how he's having this "what i'm doing with my life" thing. it also shows where the flightsuit comes from, they promised fire sword for next season

Pre-Drago ruining everything or post movie, I haven't really settled on it yet because one really puts a sense of urgency to get home and that depends on the game setting.

I might have to take a look at the third season if I can find it, that's leaning more toward the second movie by the sound of it.

first: i like what the other anon said a lot. also don't forget he can be a little shit too, he's not just a good guy.

(some comments that may be kinda spoilerish comming for those reading this? nothing big but still)

Pre-Drago ruining everything: this is a popular canon point for httyd players, since it gives him the cool stuff from movie two without the shit that comes after... iii can see it, but at the same time, i kinda don't. yes, hiccup is super happy with everyone together hooray, but that still leaves the matter of wtf is my life unattended. stoick and valka distracts him from that, and then drago happens, so there is never time to discuss it. but hiccup didn't get everything magically solved - in that short moment, is he thinking of accepting to be chief? or taking care of dragons with his mom, even if in berk? the other thing you already mentioned, so kudos to you: the sense of urgency because drago is about to fuck things up. tldr; yes, a comfy canon point, but not as happy as everyone believes

postmovie: hiccup has something new ahead of him, so this isn't the usual post-canon point like it happens with other canons - everything done, live happily ever after. his story isn't over, a new page begins, and so more growth is happening. my biggest peeve comes from fandom missing the point on why he's become chief. it should've been astrid they said! holly shit, no. hiccup is nervous about being chief not only because he wants to get out and explore. he says it himself: he doesn't think he can be stoick. the thing is, berk does NOT need stoick any longer, or the traditional kind of viking (like astrid). berk has changed a lot, and it's hiccup's way of do things that is needed now.

btw, third season is on netflix! the other two are everywhere already. the whole series has monster of the week kind of episodes except for little plots here and there. you can start season three right there with no toruble, you'll only need to google one character or two that show up again.

Netflix is one I don't have, but I've been meaning to look into it since there are several shows on there I've been told are good. lol

I don't know why, but Pre-Drago for me ran before he nabs Toothless and Stoic dies. Not like pre movie, probably right when he's knocking on the door and that battle is about to happen; so tons of stress that something is going to happen, the dread of it so to speak.

All fine points though! I plan to rewatch the movies and try catching up on that third season.

Thanks!

just checked torrents and the third season is up too. but netflix has one month free if you just wanna watch dragons. it has all the movies and specials, too. if you do end up getting netflix, i recommend the extension zenmate for your broswer, it lets you change your location. usa has the most shit, obviously, but some stuff they have on rent other countries have it online, and some things that are popular in certain parts are only available there (for example i'm in latinamerica so we have soccer anime)

and you're welcome! hope to see you around, i'll never have enough of hiccup around

He's smart, but he's impulsive and that's what keeps him acting like a dork and getting into trouble. Just because he can use his brain doesn't mean he always does, which is a good thing to keep in mind for both his decisions/reactions on a mental level, but also for verbal/physical. He starts loud an fast, sometimes tripping up over himself because he's in a rush to keep up with the impulse to ACT. His gestures even more when things are intense because it's more to process.

Hiccup's eager to impress, but after the first movie we see the results of pride in him -> more responsibility -> BUT HOW AND WHY. More "didn't think this next part through". Riders/Defenders of Berk show him getting used to being the one good at things and who people look to, but by Race to the Edge, he wants to goof around even if it's in a "meaningful" way (charting islands, discovering dragons, saving the day). He missed his childhood by trying too hard to be a Viking, but now that he doesn't need to, what's left to do?

That leads into the second movie and the whole...mess that happens there. He's learned that being impressive and responsible ISN'T always great, even though he likes doing a lot of the things that come to mind when you think "leader". His dad's good at being a hero AND a chief, though, so it's scary and Hiccup's feeling like he can't match up all over again, though instead of being left behind its like everyone else is trying to slingshot him to a point he doesn't feel ready for.

...wow sorry about this, I hope it makes sense. I like Hiccup's character a lot. Feel free to disagree with certain points or ask for clarification/other things!

Never thought of it that way, but that's a fine way of looking at it. He's too quick about things and he trips up, intentions aside, which goes into explaining the way he talks.

I don't understand the last paragraph there too well, so could you clarify it please?

He is a great character. lol

ayrt, hard spoilers for second movie

Let's see... At Stoick's funeral, Hiccup talks about not wanting to be the chief because he could never measure up, no one could ever be that good, they could only try. The tv series' are about Hiccup coming into his own and getting comfortable in this place in society he's created for himself, while also slowly having chief responsibilities unloaded on to him. He settles disputes, makes decisions, learns to balance what he wants vs what's needed (something he constantly has an issue with).

He learns that as much as he looks up to his dad, being the big shot isn't all it's cracked up to be. He starts avoiding responsibilities because it's not "fun"/the thing that got him noticed by the tribe in the first place. It feels weird, even though it's something he's wanted to do for a long time. It doesn't help that if he doesn't try, then he can't fail. He's gotten used to NOT failing at everything, but still worries that he's the same gawky awkward teen no matter how much of a brave, casual face he puts on.

So now the "what if" is turning into something real, he's been formally called to be a chief. Everyone expects that he'll be a great chief because of all he's done for Berk, but he's terrified so he's runs and goes out looking for freedom and finds an adventure he's familiar with -- change the views on dragons. If he can get that, maybe things will work out! One last win and then he either starts chiefdom off with a bang, or everything fizzles out because after that he's back to being a disappointment.
