Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Me too, anon.

I hope people actually do use the HMD in case they have issues with individual players

I know the night is young yet but it's a little depressing that only three people thus far have commented to others.

seems to be livening up now!

there's a bit of "thanks for bringing that up but you're entirely wrong. here's why. sooooooo i'm not going to change anything" starting to go on here.

Re: HMD

tbf people arent obligated to take critique if they feel it doesn't fit

at least people are actually talking and explaining their reasoning when they disagree, which is better than other hmds ive seen

Re: HMD

(Anonymous) 2015-09-03 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't think it's wrong to be defensive of how you play a character. but dismissing crit entirely isn't really the way to go either. it just makes them seem like they can't admit to being wrong even slightly or are simply unwilling to listen.

Re: HMD

(Anonymous) 2015-09-03 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between disagreement and dismissal. From what I can see, people are acknowledging the opinions being offered which to be fair is all that the one doing the critique is entitled to.

Re: HMD

(Anonymous) 2015-09-03 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
im not seeing a lot of outright dismissal from the responses ive seen. ive seen a lot more of 'this is why i did this but ill keep what you said in mind'

any1 coming to mind for outright dismissals?

And here we see why crit culture is bullshit. If you don't immediately bow to whatever crit given you're obviously dismissive.

people offering crit are not always right

the interpretation being crit is not necessarily wrong or ooc even if it doesn't line up exactly with what someone who gives crit thinks it should be

someone pointing out the reason they play the character the way they do and giving canon examples to support their view instead of blindly jumping to agree and immediately change how they play is not "somebody who can't take crit"

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. People have different, equally valid perspectives on canon. It's important to remember that when receiving crit.

if i didn't agree with most of the crit that was given out this meme then yeah, i'd say you're right. being ic is debatable and not fundamental to rping.

Does anyone plan to critique the scene girl assassins? At least one of them is on the HMD meme. This would be a good opportunity for players to actually address the concerns they have with them.

Re: HMD

(Anonymous) 2015-09-03 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
personally I'm holding off until december's hmd, because I haven't been the most present this month and thus haven't seen them around (I don't feel able to crit them based on their apps alone, and don't feel it would be fair). if I have enough worth bringing up by next hmd, then I'll do so.

Re: HMD

(Anonymous) 2015-09-03 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
hvnt played with them yet since ive been too busy this month. whats concerning about them?

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally? I don't have a problem with them. I don't feel they're any more or less ridiculous than some of the anime canons already in game. Anons have shared crit/concerns about them so I was just wondering if anyone planned to go to the players with them. That's all.

Re: HMD

(Anonymous) 2015-09-03 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to but there's no constructive way to say "the very concept of your character is like something ripped out of the worst imaginable YA novel, why would you do this".

Re: HMD

(Anonymous) 2015-09-04 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
so your complaint is their canon sucks

would you say this to an actual canon player (possibly from some terrible YA novel you didn't like) or is it just OCs who get it?

Re: HMD

(Anonymous) 2015-09-04 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
you can play a canon character you enjoy from an otherwise stupid canon, because you see some good in them even if the series they came from is shittily written drivel...but with OCs from original universes, the player makes the canon. it's not the same complaint AT ALL.

Re: HMD

(Anonymous) 2015-09-04 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
if that is the only complaint you have about the character? yeah it is

you don't have to like a character. you don't have to like their canon no matter who wrote it. if the player enjoys it, if they were accepted by your app mods, and if they don't cause shit in your game then there is nothing to complain about.

unless you can come up with a way to actual crit them about an actual issue all you are doing is saying 'your canon sucks why the fuck would anyone play from it' you may not like it, it may be the player's world they created, but they shouldn't have to change it just to satisfy you

and before anyone says it, no I only play canon characters

Re: HMD

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
On one hand I see where you're coming from, I honestly do. But from my POV it's not exactly the same thing. If you're playing a shitty canon character from a shitty YA novel, then the expectation is that you do the best you can with what somebody else effectively thought up for you. With an OC, the expectation is that you conceptualize the character to the best of your ability and play them consistently according to the information you've provided about them.

Maybe it's not fair, but when you're given free reign to build a character from the ground up, you better do the extra heavy lifting and make them outstanding. Scene girl assassins are not outstanding.
