I want to do full-on fancomics for the spinoff of a series I never got into and therefore probably don't know nearly enough about the world and background to pull it off.

I know this feel. If it's an easy enough series to get ahold of, watch the key episodes at least, and get thee to the series wiki if there is one. I'd say you can start drawing anything you want before you've watched the whole series, but if you really love it, you'll be able to watch all of it no problem. Unless it's crazy long...
