dying for a Pleasantville/Stepfordian/Mayfield-esque game set in the 1950s again. Plot-driven, slow burn mystery with a bit of horror; characters have to complete tasks and work together to get out.

no omnipotent secret god NPCs, just Science Run Amok that characters could have a direct hand in improving/breaking/turning into a shiny piñata idek

you know, i like these types of games too and they tend to be pretty long lasting. vaguely mysterious sol is something dwrp is lacking right now.

but they also have a ton of drama and wank too. from what i remember of the top of my head one of the big issues is how to handle housing/nuclear families when there are so many kids/teens compared to the amount of adults. i think a new gimmick with regards to that would be a nicer then playing it straight like mayfield and holly heights did.

like. what if a character is randomly stuck in a roll no matter who they are. so your 50 year old detective gets rolled as younger son and gets sent to elementary school and the npc at the corner store gives them free candy when they stop by. or a mass murderer gets rolled as housewife and he gets pressured to visit the pta and participate in bake sales. only player characters realize that this is fucking weird and wrong.

it would also mean that all houses are full at all times since any man or woman could be any roll, the npcs would just react accordingly. hell, you could even have your normal dude rolled as the pet dog and npcs continually pat their head.

actually this idea would be fucking hilarious. like make the setting 100% serious and just stick all our characters into these fucking dumb events they would never normally go to. make it mysterious and potentially spooky but still keep it light hearted.

like whatever mysterious NPC is on the character's side needs to stay under the radar so they only come out during big events in the town where they can blend in. so you have characters like "which of us are fake teenagers? we just got a message that secret agent bob will be at the sadie hawkins dance- shit we need dates do you guys remember if you are girls or boys?" and then you can perfectly balance the people that just want to sol and go to the fucking dance and the characters that want to get the hell out who are going to get info on this messed up place.

it's light hearted and a bit fringe horrory all at the same time

+1

While I LOVE the humor involved in a random roll for roles, I'm not quite sure it would entirely fit with the kind of feel I'd be after? :|a But it's definitely something to consider, in terms of shaking up the usual status quo.

hi op! i definitely wrote that blurb with humor in mind because i personally enjoy a laugh but i've been stuck on this idea all night and how it would work in an actual game with mystery and horror elements. i've been chatting with softfootbags as well and i'd love to talk ideas with you! :)

sorry if you get this twice, dw is eating my replies

Hey Nonny, feel free to pm me at sockalareine when you're free. Once I'm home I might go ahead and shove up a Google docs or something to start putting things in order :/a

if any ambitious anons out there are listening, PLEASE make this happen. there are so many horror movies and stories that take place in the 50s and use the setting in creative, scary ways. it practically writes itself and it would be instantly more engaging and entertaining than 80% of the games we have right now.

OP, I am so down to make this happen. I'd like to work with you or run with the idea if you were just throwing it out there.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
not op, but go for it. i've been dying for a 1950s horror game ever since mayfield died an ugly death.

[personal profile] sockembopper 2015-07-24 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
not op either, but i wouldn't mind helping bounce ideas around for this. i'm the anon up there that ranted about stupid role reversal things.

DANG you guys are quick and prolific and awesome. C:

I have a basic idea of what I'd like to do and where I'd like to go with this, thanks to some sweet help from the sock bros above. I guess keep an eye on future game idea spaces for updates and eventual solicitations for mod help!

I’m really glad you’re going for it, OP. one last piece of input I have for you is to just be fearless. I wouldn’t advocate ripping off Mayfield completely, but what made their atmosphere unique was their npcs and the level of interactivity with the players they had going on, and just how far they’d take the events in terms of gross scariness. make an awesome, mysterious, horrifying metaplot to contrast with the creepily wholesome 50s values. If you’d like to look at other sources for inspiration on the sort of mood you should cultivate, I can pm you a list; for now just watch a ton of old Twilight Zone episodes and read stories like The Stepford Wives and this one really killer Stephen King story called “You Know They’ve Got One Hell of a Band” which nails the whole creepy 50s vibe really well.

Good luck!

Awesome advice, thank you! I'm a big junkie for 1950's material culture and pulp horror comics as well. Feel free to pm me any source recs too, I'd appreciate it!
