Please understand

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

i usually default to just saying i'm sorry whatever is happening and asking if i can help. or if they're kind of a shy person, suggesting something i wouldn't mind doing to help them out. it's very situational and honestly you have to have an awareness of what's socially appropriate in a given context as well as the personality of who you're talking to. but almost everyone will appreciate offers of assistance or availability

my biggest problem with "it could be worse" is that it shuts the other person down because, yeah, it could always be worse. that's incredibly pointless to say. but it comes with an implicit command to "quit your bitching" regardless as to whether it's intended that way, and i think that's mean to do to someone who's struggling even if you don't think their problems are that serious

if you honestly interpret someone trying to be optimistic in response to you unloading your problems on them as them implicitly telling you to quit your bitching, you need therapy

You have literally never interacted with another human being face to face, have you. You could not sound like more of a basement dweller if you tried.

"It could be worse" is not optimistic. It does not express hope for the future.
