Not really a question about icons but icon makers, if you're making icons for an entire canon and rp from it, do you make a different set for your own? Do you not release icons for just the character you play? Do you prefer having the icons you use be special and be your own? Or do you not really care and just share whatever you make, whether it was for your own personal use or not?

i don't know if i'd call myself an 'icon maker', since i only really do it out of necessity than as a hobby. but i've gone and made whole sets, extra sets, just a set, and it's usually of a char that doesn't have icons of them or has very limited ones that don't suit my purpose. so i share them all. because if i'm not satisfied with what's out there, other people might feel my pain. and they might not like mine or like all of mine or w/e, but at least i'll put what i've done out there so people have an option, because it fucking sucks when you're looking for icons and all you can find are char journals with 'dnt/dns' on them.

i share most of them but usually, if it's a character i'm really attached to, there's a few crops/variations i've got uploaded that i'll leave out of the posted batch. if someone took them from my journal though i'd be fine with it even if they didn't credit because at the end of the day whateveeeerrrr

i don't usually make many of the character i play shareable, but i usually icon 30+ of other canon characters.

I usually make icons of my own characters or per request by friends.

I post them because people usually lift them from my accounts if I don't so I may as well make it easier for people to find full sets whenever paid accounts expire or when I delete them.

When I get commissions, sometimes I don't mind sharing them with others if they're obscure characters. If they're a popular with lots of icon material, then I'm a bit pickier about sharing the commissions.

I have no drive to icon things I'm not rping myself, unless it's a set I'm doing for a friend (in which case I don't make it public). All the icons set I've ever released where my own, I just decided to share them. I don't really care about being THE ONLY ONE!!!!! with a specific set, I figure if other people can benefit from me having time and skills to put to use, why not.

Ehhh, I don't really ever post the icons I've made anywhere public like an icon comm or anything, but I don't care if other people find them and use them from the journals they're on.

I prefer my icons being special and my own and don't tend to release icons for characters I play until I'm done playing the character and I do put "do not take" messages as well for my manga colorings.

But if someone were to ask because I do tend to play more obscure characters who aren't iconed by anyone but me, I have no issue whipping up an alternate batch of the manga colorings with different backgrounds and it doesn't take too long to do. I'd rather do that than have someone take my personal set.

I play a character that's pretty obscure, too, so I tend not to randomly release icons for her, just because I doubt anyone will use them.

And by obscure I mean I'm the only one of her I've seen in an actual game.

But if someone wanted some, I'd totally make some for them!

When I was making icons back in the day, I'd make a special set for my own character, to keep them all matching. I prefer all of mine to be a single "set" that I use, but I never had any problems with letting other people use them. It kind of felt nice to see people using them, actually, because for one of the characters, there were always a ton of icons. Even years later, I see people using mine, and it's nice to see they're still going to good use.
