Recently finished "Railroaded: The Transcontinentals and the Making of Modern America," which was a fascinating study of the general corruption, incompetence, political maneuvering and popular strife involved in the construction of the transcontinental North American railroads.
It was a bit dry and a lot long, so I'm decompressing with some light modern fantasy at the moment, but if you're interested in the subject it's a great read.
